GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Responsible for oversight and coordination of United Church of Christ (UCC) strategies, programs and resources related gender, gender expression, and LGBTQI+ education, equity, and advocacy. This includes serving as the Executive Director of the United Church AIDS Network (aka UCAN), and assigned liaison to The Open and Affirming Coalition of the UCC, United Church of Christ Wellness Ministries, and the Unitarian Universalist Association specifically regarding agreements related to Our Whole Lives Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate short-term and long-range program objectives and goals, consulting with others as appropriate.
  • Promote the program’s positive public image by responding in writing and orally on a timely basis to inquiries for information, providing consultation, accepting speaking engagements and serving as a resource person to the whole church.
  • Contribute to the effectiveness of work teams by fostering a spirit of cooperation and by accomplishing assigned tasks in a timely fashion.
  • Prepare and administer annual budget allocations, ensuring good stewardship of financial resources; identify supplemental sources for program monies.
  • Supervise, monitor and evaluate employee performance of staff persons to the Gender & Sexuality Justice Ministry. .
  • Develop and maintain professional and courteous relationships with staff, directors, partner churches and other constituents; serve as a positive role model by exemplifying values which are consistent with the UCC.
  • Serve as Member of the Ministry Advisory Council

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer+ (LGBTQI+) Concerns

  • Coordinate with the Open and Affirming Coalition of the UCC (The Coalition) to support gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender UCC members.
  • Identify and prioritize existing and emerging concerns and recommend policies, programmatic options, and courses of action.
  • Work closely with The Coalition to create educational and other resources related to various gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender concerns for use in all settings and by all constituents of the United Church of Christ and its partners. This includes materials for the Open and Affirming movement.
  • Work collaboratively among the Covenanted Ministries of the UCC to strengthen LGBTQI+ Ministries.
  • Represent the UCC at appropriate LGBTQI+ tables, community gatherings and conferences, both nationally and internationally.

Sexuality Education and Justice

  • Conceptualize and prepare materials to interpret ministry and program objectives to the conferences and local churches.
  • Develop cooperative relationships with faith-based and community-based coalitions and organizations that advocate for civil rights and justice around issues of sexual orientation and identity, public and social policies that affect the quality of family life, and rights for children.
  • Collaborate with staff in other covenanted ministries to coordinate advocacy and education on human sexuality, family life and children’s rights.
  • Collaborate with Minister for Sexuality Education and Justice, who will oversee training for church members seeking to introduce existing resources such as Our Whole Lives and Sexuality and Our Faith in their local churches.

Global Health Issues (Domestic and International)

  • Serve as Executive Director of UCAN, Inc., the UCC HIV and AIDS Network.
  • Identify and prioritize existing and emerging issues and recommend policies, programmatic options, and courses of action.
  • Enable the sharing of information regarding global health issues (domestic and international) within the UCC and encourage congregational response.
  • Facilitate awareness and prevention education for clergy and laity regarding HIV andAIDS and other key health concerns.
  • Consult with Area Executives and other Global Ministries staff to seek out opportunities for collaboration and partnership in relation to Gender & Sexuality Justice.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to perform successfully in this position.

  • Graduate level degree in theology, education, social work, public health, or another related field.
  • Experience in and knowledge of pastoral and/or programmatic ministry with LGBT persons and their families.
  • Experience in and knowledge of Gender based health and advocacy, particularly with regard to education and/or service provision.
  • Familiarity with faith-based and community organizations that address concerns of social policy affecting families and children.
  • Basic knowledge of sexuality education and advocacy, and in family dynamics.
  • Understanding of public policies relating to families, children, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons.
  • Commitment to and theological understanding of Christian mission in its broadest expression; ability to articulate and witness to one’s faith perspective.
  • Understanding of and commitment to justice from a biblical/theological perspective.
  • Understanding of the polity and structures of the UCC (and Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, when applicable).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially as well as independently.
  • Desire and sensitivity to work in diverse racial, ethnic, cultural and religious settings with commitment to pluralism in the workplace as well as in one’s understanding of mission.
  • Demonstrated written and oral English language skills, including ability to conceptualize and develop print, video and other resources; public speaking skills.
  • Ability to interpret sensitive and often controversial material to persons who have diverse personal, biblical, and theological understandings and perspectives.
  • Competency in leadership planning, development and training.
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets and in office administration; demonstrated human relations and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in community organizing and/or in parish ministry.
  • Computer literate and willing to increase skills.
  • Ability to travel within the United States and globally as necessary.
