Plans, organizes, and directs the activities of the Collections, Repossession, Bankruptcy, and Negative Share areas; maximizing service and recoveries while minimizing losses. Makes final decisions regarding action on delinquent loans/accounts, including workout loans and extensions. Establishes, implements, and regularly updates departmental collection and recovery policies, operational procedures, and other guidelines relating to the disposition of credit union assets. Coordinates the legal efforts on delinquent and charged-off accounts and monitors results/adjusts efforts of repossession agents and assignments to collection agencies. Liaison with credit reporting agencies to assure files are properly maintained. Represents the company in small claims, municipal and bankruptcy courts. Conducts risk analysis and mitigation. Identifies risk management issues and trends and provides reporting to management. The Director also reviews systems, products, processes, and audits; making the necessary changes to stay in compliance, manage risk and improve the member experience. This role is also responsible for developing the Member Solutions staff and leaders through effective training, coaching, and accountability. This position also focuses on:

  • Leads and manages the collections, repossession, and recovery activities of the department. Provides leadership to staff through effective objective setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts staff meetings as required. Informs personnel of policy, procedural, and legal changes. Discusses areas needing improvement. Ensures that staff are well trained, effective, and optimally used. Identifies training needs; develops and implements appropriate training programs. Conducts training sessions and cross- trains as appropriate. Is responsible for performance evaluations and annual review of performance expectations for subordinate personnel.
  • Analyzes Risk Management trends and communicates results to management. Develops and implements strategies and tactics to address negative trends and isolation of impacting factors to reduce delinquencies and charge-offs while maximizing recoveries. Evaluates and provides timely responses to customer inquiries for loss mitigation relief, including payment modifications. Assists in the resolution of difficult and complex member account situations.
  • Proactively analyzes monthly losses, identifying and projecting subsequent month's losses and delinquency ratios and numbers. Prepares and maintains required records and reports regarding loss mitigation loan servicing activities to remain in compliance with regulations and internal controls. Facilitates monthly charge-off review meeting to discuss charge off and loss trends with management. Oversees charge-offs, repossessions, foreclosures, and various court collection actions. Oversees the timely completion of monthly charge-off processing.
  • Evaluates and manages the negotiation, establishment, and monitoring of business relationships with various vendors who provide services to the credit union through the Member Solutions Department. Provides ownership over systems utilized in the end-to- end processes performed in the Member Solutions Department.
  • Oversees and completes all projects as assigned. Keeps management apprised of all critical issues.
  • Oversees the appropriate documentation for bankruptcy accounts. Oversees Small Claims Court documentation with the court. Prepares the required documentation for assignment to collection agencies or attorney. Attends court hearings for various legal/bankrupt files. Oversees the preparation of delinquent accounts for charge off requests.
  • Must comply with and promulgate compliance throughout the Member Solutions department with all applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, the Office of Foreign Assets Control, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Uniform Commercial Code, Federal Bankruptcy Act, Federal Privacy Act, repossession, collection laws and all other applicable State and Federal laws in regards to collection activity.

Compensation Range: $67,044 - $100,567

Position Requirements

EXPERIENCE: Five to Seven years of progressive collections experience with a thorough knowledge of collections, servicing, foreclosure, bankruptcy procedures and legal requirements.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES: Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university in Business or related field or equivalent. Combination of specialized banking or credit union education and training in a collection environment required. Credit & Collections Compliance Professional (CCCP) or similar designation preferred.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: The ability to motivate or influence senior level personnel, internally or externally, is a key component of the job, requiring a significant level of expertise, credibility, influence and trust. Proficiency in developing and delivering material presentations on complex topics can be important to fulfilling the responsibilities of the position. The inability to communicate at this level would disqualify the individual from being able to fulfill their job responsibilities.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 4-6 hours per day. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled private office with minimal noise.

MENTAL AND/OR EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform job functions independently and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to plan and direct the work activities of self and others. Must be able to read and carry out various complicated written and oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
