Sailing Instructor and Educator for Day and Overnight Programs 

Description

Mystic Seaport Museum is seeking a dynamic sailing instructor and educator to deliver programs to children and youth in a variety of settings in our Education Department, including teaching sailing at our Sailing Center.  This position will also include sleeping overnight at the Museum while staffing overnight programs on our vessel the Joseph Conrad, leading educational programs during the day at the Museum, and providing programs in schools and community organizations during and after school.  This position includes working some weekends. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach students  how to sail on Dyer Dhow sailboats
  • Provide the highest quality dynamic educational programming for school groups, scouts, summer campers, afterschool programs, and homeschool groups
  • Create and maintain a safe space for youth and implement strategies for social emotional wellbeing
  • Supervise guests overnight on board the Joseph Conrad
  • Lead experiential education activities including climbing the rigging on the Joseph Conrad
  • Provide excellent customer service and excellent visitor experiences
  • Build a professional repertoire through continuous growth and mastery of content, demonstration skills, hands-on education, presentation and delivery techniques and educational theory
  • Contribute to the development of new programs and activities
  • Help advance department and institutional goals, adhere to mission, and serve as ambassador for Mystic Seaport Museum

 

 
Position Requirements
  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination and booster by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Experience teaching sailing
  • Ability to work effectively and enthusiastically with diverse audiences, including children, families and school groups, in a variety of learning environments
  • Experience in youth development/youth services with proven ability to engage and motivate youth of varied backgrounds
  • Knowledge of positive youth development and the ability to work with the most vulnerable populations
  • Strong ability to motivate youth and manage behavior problems in a positive manner
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills
  • Ability to engage students in a dynamic and energetic manner
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • College level training is required; background in sailing, youth development, experiential education, summer camps, overnight programs, museum experience and/or teaching experience is preferred
  • Willingness to work a highly flexible schedule corresponding to the needs of the Museum

Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence.
