Job Summary:

Perform professional analytical and chemical testing of food products, ingredients, and environmentals. Responsible for the application and evaluation of approved chemical techniques and methodologies of food testing products/environmentals. The position has the authority to act as the laboratory Lead Chemist. The Lead Chemist will have frequent contact with the laboratory customer base when needed as well as perform frequent review and interpretation of laboratory results. Responsible for supporting analytical laboratory processes including technology, methodology, laboratory proficiency measurements, research, and scientific processes. This position will have routine contact with the company’s client base and will assist with all aspects of the company’s special projects and research initiatives.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Accurately perform and read test results and notify Laboratory Management of deviations.
  • Prepare media and reagents as needed for daily chemical testing.
  • Apply aseptic/chemical techniques in daily workload; coordinate sample collection, transport, and receiving.
  • Independently pursue an assigned series of processes, procedures, or techniques in accordance with Food Safety Net Services Methods Manual, Quality Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan, Safety Manual, and approved laboratory procedures
  • Report inventory and expendable supplies/materials needed for testing requirements; purchase supplies and monitor equipment maintenance, improving optimization by reviewing equipment, products, and processes
  • Provide routine preventive maintenance by daily cleaning, sanitizing, trash disposal, and equipment quality control
  • Assist in quality control duties including quality control documentation
  • Supervise training of new and current laboratory personnel in laboratory procedures and protocols as assigned
  • Maintain safe, efficient, and compliant lab operations, to include equipment maintenance and purchasing supplies
  • Manage data to assure tests are reported properly, filed, and sent out in a timely manner
  • Maintain customer satisfaction while achieving desired business results
  • Manage priorities and schedules such that individual goals as well as team goals are achieved with encouraged participation in the Food Safety Net Services Team
  • Supervise and assist with special projects and tasks as assigned to include audit preparation.
  • Responsible for the safety of oneself and others working within their area
  • Responsible for the completion of required training
  • Interpret data and present findings with appropriate documentation, references and supporting material to the food and other associated industries
  • Chromatographic data interpretation and correlation back to process, materials or contamination issues
  • Maintain a high degree of technical competence by reading scientific journals, attending professional workshops, and being aware of food and associated industries regulations, issues and trends
  • Use expertise to mentor junior chemists and lab technicians
  • Provides training to lab personnel or methods application
  • Assisting with managing priorities and schedule such that individual goals as well as team goals are achieved with encouraged participation in the Food Safety Net Services Team

Supervision:

  • Role may have supervisory responsibilities
  • Carry out responsibilities in accordance with organization's policies and applicable laws
  • Responsibilities may include interviewing, training, directing work, and appraising performance
  • Expectation to indirectly lead oversight of two or more staff working on projects

 

 

 
Position Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field preferred
  • Four years of analytical laboratory experience
  • Four or more years of experience in analytical laboratory experience to include commercial food-testing laboratory (preferred)
  • Working knowledge of aseptic sampling technique, automated lab equipment, and acceptable methods and procedures
  • Familiarity with GMP, OSHA guidelines, FDA, BAM, APHA, and Compendium methods and procedure
  • Broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of a food testing laboratory or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must have a strong analytical chemistry background and have working knowledge of GC, HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GCMS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS. Advanced experience in at least on area of instrumentation preferred.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and to handle other communications/computer components
  • Potential exposure to odors, fumes, airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, and microbiological pathogens
  • Noise level varies from quiet to loud
  • Temperature varies from hot to cold
  • Color vision and depth perception
  • Interactive and fast-paced team oriented tasks
  • Overnight Travel may be required at the discretion of management
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
