Sr. Manager – Project Management (IT)

Job Summary:

Directs project managers, major strategic projects or multiple mid/small projects within large, complex business unit. Manages all aspects of operating the project management function, including management and ownership of the Portfolio of Projects and application development backlog processes. Works collaboratively with Business Unit leaders and IT leadership team and vendors organize project delivery lifecycle practices and allocate/manage the PMs to business projects. Monitors and reports on overall status of projects for the supported business unit. Guides and trains others in the use of the project management methodology, best practices, and tools.


Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and manage major projects with overall accountability for project success while simultaneously directing one or more project managers on major projects or numerous smaller projects.
  2. As needed, act as Program Manager, with accountability for related series of projects, executed over a broad period of time, which are designed to accomplish enterprise transformation goals to which these individual projects contribute.
  3. Implement and follow Project Management standard methodologies, processes and tools, develop and maintain project documentation, work plans and project deliverables. Guide and train others in the use of the methodology and tools
  4. Manage and motivate project teams, planning work assignments and schedules. Evaluate team member performance against established goals, completing project evaluations on a timely basis.
  5. Accountable for project delivery, prioritization, resource planning, stakeholder reviews and escalations
  6. Determine project risk factors and issues and direct mitigation plans. Initiate and maintain issues logs, taking responsibility for identifying and coordinating resolution of all technical and business issues.
  7. Work with project sponsor(s) to establish project performance goals, metrics and baseline measures.
  8. Establish and maintain effective communications with team members, stakeholders, senior management and contacts. Communicate project status to identified stakeholders through routine status reports and meetings.
  9. Ensure all project time is accounted for and project and team member activities are routinely collected and reported in standard fashion following established processes. Estimate resources needed on projects to ensure success.
  10. Coordinate vendor activities to ensure project success. Work directly with engagement/project managers from implementation partners to coordinate project delivery with outside vendor resources
  11. Advance project management competencies, including development of methodology and tools, development and delivery of education/training, completion of quality reviews and coaching others engaged in project management activities.
  12. Hire or contract with project management resources to staff key projects.
  13. Other duties as assigned


Position Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, Healthcare Management or related field.
  • Minimum 5-10 years project management experience in information systems project roles.
  • 3-5 years of project management leadership experience and proven track record of leading large enterprise-wide projects
  • Demonstrated capability to manage projects/programs with both large and small budgets leading these projects to successful implementation and life cycle.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to provide clear messages to all levels
  • Strong leadership competencies for coaching and developing PMs and project coordinators
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively establish and maintain strategic working relationships with peers and constituents at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated analysis and problem-solving skills using innovative thinking.
  • Experience working with and negotiating with external vendors.
  • Certification in Project Management
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% required


  • Experience with standard project management tools, methodologies and frameworks.
  • Broad working knowledge and experience with Lab based (LIMS) applications and enterprise resource planning (ERP) technology deployments.
  • Experience in managing large scale IT transformation projects and/or programs.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands and arms, talk and hear
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and to handle other communications/computer components
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Potential exposure to odors, fumes, airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, and microbiological pathogens
