Position Summary:

The HRM Storytellers Peer Facilitators co-lead new cohorts of intimate partner violence survivors through House of Ruth Maryland’s storytelling program via a peer-designed curriculum. Job duties include preparing for, setting up, leading, cleaning up, and debriefing an initial information session, eight weekly program sessions—featuring appearances by guest speakers, a dress rehearsal, and a storytelling performance—and a final program reunion. Specifically, the Peer Facilitators lead opening and closing grounding exercises, check-ins, icebreakers, warm-up exercises, discussions, and activities during each of the program’s eight weekly sessions and also host an open house-style information session at the start of the program, a live storytelling performance during the program, and a celebratory reunion at the end of the program. In addition, the Peer Facilitators register all program participants, which includes performing individual intake assessments to screen for participants’ readiness to enroll in the program and also to ensure their safety. The program takes place twice a year—once in the summer and once in the winter. The Peer Facilitators are supervised by the Training Institute Manager, and supported by House of Ruth Maryland staff, including a Project Coordinator assigned to HRM Storytellers and a licensed member of the agency’s Clinical Services team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate weekly program sessions in accordance with the program’s curriculum and design
  • Assist in the development and delivery of outreach materials
  • Host recruitment, storytelling, and reunion events
  • Conduct participant intake assessments
  • Participate in group preparation, facilitation, and debrief, as well as, peer review sessions with other agency staff
  • Maintain electronic and paper file documentation for groups and participants in keeping with program standards
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships with community partners
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Attend and participate in regular staff and agency meetings
  • Provides community education and training on intimate partner violence and agency services

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of HRM Storytellers
  • Dedication to the mission of the House of Ruth Maryland
  • Ability to understand intimate partner violence and how it affects the client population
  • Ability to work with clients in crisis, ascertain the appropriate information, and direct their requests as necessary
  • Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds including clients, House of Ruth Maryland staff, and members of the community
  • Experience working with individuals with diverse backgrounds
  • Highly sensitive to and informed about concepts related to advocacy and anti-oppression work
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Storytelling, presentation, and public speaking experience
  • Dependable in time management
  • Evening and weekend hours are required for this position
  • Computer literate (MS Office, internet, e-mail) is required and experience with data tracking systems is preferred
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds to transport supplies and materials

Must be violence free in own life with no charges of violence within a minimum of three years. If applicant has ever been identified as a perpetrator of intimate partner violence, the applicant must have successfully completed a certified abuse intervention program.
