Visitor Experience Associate, Part-Time

Description

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures furthers the understanding, celebration, and preservation of cinema through inclusive and accessible exhibitions, screenings, programs, initiatives, and collections. Welcoming visitors from Los Angeles and around the world, the Museum works in active partnership with motion picture artists and specialists, scholars, staff, and diverse communities to contextualize and challenge dominant narratives around cinema, inspiring discourse, connection, joy, and discovery.

Working independently, under the guidance of the Visitor Experience Lead, the Visitor Experience Associate will take an active role in supporting the day-to-day directives of their supervisors. The Associates serve a unique, dual role in providing security assistance and acting as educators, operating as key liaisons between visitors and exhibitions. They are responsible for the security and safety of the objects on view and of visitors, and for actively encouraging visitors to discuss their questions and ideas about film. The Associates will be trained in both security regulations and current museum education practices and theory. They will also attend and actively participate in all (paid) training in security procedures, education techniques, and exhibition content. As frontline staff, they must maintain a friendly and professional attitude towards visitors and staff at all times. Through responsive, individual conversations, they make a museum a welcoming, accessible space for visitors. You will thrive in this role if you work well with crowds, are self-motivated, focused, and reliable.

You Will:

  • Handle cash and help visitors get tickets to the museum or to programs.
  • Work well with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Talk to visitors in the galleries about the exhibitions.
  • Process new museum memberships and check-in group visitors.
  • Help visitors plan out their visit and how to use the mobile app.
  • Work with the leadership team to report any hardware or software issues.
  • Ensure the safety of objects in the Museum in accordance with established security procedures such as keeping visitors at prescribed distances from objects on view; monitoring the flow of visitors in galleries; reporting any incident involving visitors touching or damaging exhibition objects.
  • Ensure the safety of visitors and staff on the Museum’s premises such as assisting with evacuation during emergencies; reporting problems, suspicious activity, and safety hazards to a Supervisor.
  • Secure various posts throughout the Museum including gallery spaces and public areas; ticketing, admissions, and access control; and bag check.
  • Invite and discuss visitor comments and questions about current exhibitions, the collection, the museum, and its history.
  • Prepare for all exhibitions with thorough knowledge of curatorial content, museum education theory around inquiry-based teaching, and the work of various museum departments.
  • Attend department meetings/huddles, read departmental memos, and remain aware of all policy updates.
  • Other duties as assigned.
