Senior Campaigner or Senior Advocate (Position Based in New Mexico)

About the Organization At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive!

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a full-time senior campaigner or senior advocate in New Mexico to launch and advance our state-level work to end oil and gas production. This position is located in New Mexico.

General position overview:

The Climate Law Institute wages innovative legal and grassroots campaigns to protect people, wildlife and ecosystems from climate change and the fossil fuel industry. We work at every level, including international, federal, state, and local campaigns. We seek a senior campaigner/advocate to develop and lead our state organizing to swiftly, justly, and completely phase out oil and gas production in New Mexico. The senior campaigner/advocate will work closely with a dynamic team of legal, science, organizing, and communications staff, as well as colleagues at allied organizations, advocating to keep oil and gas in the ground in New Mexico as science demands.

Main duties:

  • Developing and implementing state-level campaign strategies to move New Mexico toward a rapid and total phase-out of oil and gas production.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with coalition allies working together to achieve our common goals, including through regular in-person, phone, and electronic communication. We prioritize policy goals that center justice and ensure an equitable transition off fossil fuels for communities and workers.
  • Forming strategic relationships with new allies to increase our mutual power. We work closely with environmental justice organizations. We are committed to supporting movements to dismantle racism, white supremacy, and all forms of colonization and oppression.
  • Organizing and promoting participation in hearings, protests, and other advocacy efforts.
  • Coordinating excellent communication between staff throughout the organization regarding campaign activities and goals.
  • Expanding recruitment and engagement of Center supporters in New Mexico.
  • Travel required (when safe).

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully navigate challenges, including from a powerful and well-resourced opposition.
  • Proficiency in digital organizing strategy including: building digital ladders of engagement for supporters; engaging supporters using email, text, and social media; and collaborating with frontline partners on digital communications.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment with a full workload where it is necessary to balance multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Excellent analytic, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team.

Preferred qualifications, skills, and qualities:

  • Existing relationships and experience working with grassroots organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and other people of color. We especially encourage candidates who hold first-hand experience or meaningful, trusted relationships with communities impacted by fossil fuel production and environmental racism.
