JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) is responsible for assisting the General Manager in the overall coordination, direction, management, and success of the entire health and wellness club’s operations. The AGM will be the point person for all club operation and personnel issues in the absence of the General Manager. The AGM is responsible to meet performance and profit goals within the Membership Sales Department, Kid’s Zone, Massage (for Downtown, Midtown and Uptown) and the Membership Services Department while providing leadership in the areas of customer service, team member relations, sales, training, and in-center business performance. The AGM is responsible for ensuring an exceptional customer experience that supports the mission and vision of the YWCA while consistently delivering YWCA brand expectations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Lead and direct the day to day operations of the Health and Fitness facility:

  • Plan, develop and implement departmental operational policies, procedures, strategies, methods and goals that are in concert with the annual budget, Health and Wellness vision, YWCA mission and organizational policies
  • Uphold and lead by example, a high level of customer service with both internal and external customers to maximize overall customer experience and retention
  • Coordinate and/or oversee activities of your teams, such as operating, planning, sales, program marketing and facility and equipment maintenance to effect operational efficiency and economy
  • Coordinate and/or oversee all aspects of your teams activities to ensure and maintain the quality of services provided and that goals and strategies are in alignment with the Health and Wellness vision and YWCA mission and values
  • Facilitate the creation and maintenance of operational standards and procedures for your departments
  • Oversee customer service activities and ensure staff competence in these areas, so as to optimize and sustain profitability, member retention and customer satisfaction
  • Monitor performance of your teams according to standards and take necessary action to communicate/advise/assist according to performance levels
  • Confer with Leads and Coordinators to review financial activity, operations, and sales to determine changes in programs or operations required
  • Ensure your departments financial goals and budget are met
  • Analyze and direct/prepare your departmental budgets
  • Develop departmental programs, services and related pricing plans.
  • Ensure that site practices are in alignment with Human Resources, Finance and IT standards and procedures
  • Oversee departmental layout and cleanliness so as to maximize customer satisfaction, sales, appearance and image
  • Ensures that new members are tracked and called at 30 days, 60 days and 90 days after they join. Resolves any issues that they may have and promotes all areas of the club.
  • Ensure a safe and clean operating facility
  • In collaboration with Coordinators and General Manager, actively perform competitive research and analysis to evaluate existing programs as trends and standards change for continuous improvement and innovative opportunities
  • Practice conflict resolution that models respect for differences, is non-threatening, calm, and de-escalating in style
  • Practice excellent communication and teamwork skills organization wide
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all times
  • Facilitate the accurate and timely completion of administrative tasks (i.e. paperwork, payroll and operational and financial reports)
  • Provide leadership to the safety program to meet legal standards and facilitate employee health and safety
  • Develop, facilitate, and attend department and cross-departmental meetings
  • Serve as Manager-on-Duty as needed
  • Participate in community or business meetings where appropriate
  • Participate in special events or projects as assigned

Provide Leadership and supervision:

  • Direct supervise, develop and provide leadership to employees.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding, disciplining and dismissing employees; addressing complaints and solving problems
  • Establish performance standards, job expectations and current job descriptions for direct reports
  • Develop and maintain a system to measure and evaluate individuals and department’s performance against established expectations and standards
  • Ensure direct reports that are supervisors receive training and are competent in supervisory responsibilities (corrective action, performance reviews, addressing complaints and solving problems, staff coaching, writing job descriptions etc.)
  • Facilitate Uptown team training and development that aligns with Health and Wellness vision, operational plans and YWCA mission and values

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the General Manager of Uptown who reports to the Vice President of Health and Wellness. The incumbent will interact with all levels of health and fitness employees, Human Resources, IT, and Business Office. Critical relationships will include the Coordinator team.

 

 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Sports Management, Sports Medicine, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology. Or a combination of a Bachelor’s degree and experience in the Health and Fitness Industry.
  • A minimum of two to five years’ experience in a leadership role with experience in leading and supervising staff
  • Ability to effectively represent the organization and be an ambassador for its mission and programs
  • Ability to work effectively on a collaborative basis with a wide range of constituencies and stakeholders in a diverse community

Preferred:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in a leadership role with experience in leading customer service and sales staff.

  • Excellent critical thinking skills
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, presentation, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in budgeting, profit and loss review.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work on a computer for extended periods of time
  • Travel to various YWCA of Minneapolis sites
