Essential Functions:

Equipment Operator I:
- Operate heavy and light equipment without supervision and with extreme proficiency. (75%)

- Operates tampers, mowers, truck (single-axle or water for compaction and dust control), backhoe, and loader.
- Operates power tools and hand tools.
- Loads, transports and unloads hot mix, patching materials and stockpiled gravel.
- Keeps vehicles and equipment clean and in safe operating order, and follows all procedures for safe and efficient operation of equipment.
- Observes safety precautions and wears appropriate safety equipment at all times.
- Prepares equipment, work code, time cards and pre-trip equipment inspection forms, including the posting of equipment hours, fuel, oil, etc.
- Runs roller and compactor to smooth and compact patched road surfaces.
- Performs routine maintenance on equipment, including checking all fluid levels, and adding if necessary, checking and replacing air filters and greasing equipment when necessary.
- Efficient use of resources, ensuring quality and service meets department standards.
- Plow snow and ice from roads and otherwise maintains open roadways in winter weather conditions. Is available for snow removal activities during normal working hours, weekends, holidays and very early morning and evening hours.
- Carry phone and respond to calls on rotating weekend call-outs. (10%)
- Clean up flood damage, assists in fighting forest fires and performs other duties as required, in emergencies. (5%)
- May operate larger and more complex equipment for on-the-job training or special assignments. (5%)
- May be required to use basic welding skills, cutting torch skills and chainsaws. (5%)
- Perform other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.
Equipment Operator II:
- Perform all essential functions of the Equipment Operator I. (50%)
- Operate larger and more complex heavy and light equipment. (50%)
- Operate motor grader to grade dirt and/or gravel roads, cutting road surfaces to remove windrows, ruts and rocks and relays gravel for new surface and to build or reshape roadside shoulders and ditches for safety or better drainage.
- Operate tandem-axle trucks and/or graders during snowplowing and ice-removal operations.
- Operate backhoe or track hoe to dig culverts, lay pipe and to clean ditches and cattle guards.
- Operate bulldozer to rough in roads and push fill material; operates bulldozer and tire/track front-end loaders/backhoes to build dumps and crusher sites, clear right-of-ways and build roads.
- Operate loader to load trucks from gravel pile, cleans bar ditches and removes rock, mudslides or flood debris from the roads.
- Drive tandem-axle dump trucks with gravel or hot mix to road maintenance and construction sites.
- Load, transport and unload heavy equipment with tractor-trailer.
- Perform other duties of a similar or related level as necessary or assigned.

Required Physical Activities:
While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, stand, walk, bend, stoop and kneel. Employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, crouch and crawl. Employee is frequently required to lift up to 10 pounds; is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and to exert up to 100 pounds of force. Employee is occasionally required to maintain body balance while ascending or descending ladders or open stairs, and to maintain body equilibrium while bending at the waist or at the knees. The employee is routinely required to work with the hand or hands in handling, seizing, holding, or grasping motions and with the fingers in fingering, picking and pinching actions to operate objects, tools or controls. Work Environment:
Employee is exposed to outdoor weather conditions that may vary from extreme heat to extreme cold while performing the essential functions of this job. Works around construction equipment and will be exposed to debris, fumes, odors, airborne particles and dust. The employee is occasionally exposed to the possibility of bodily injury from electrical shock or mechanical hazard. The employee frequently works in and around ongoing construction. Employee will occasionally work in high, precarious places; and be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
The employee is required to drive and operate heavy equipment in all weather conditions, often at remote worksites. The employee is required to wear safety equipment to perform most of the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to participate in random drug testing to meet CDL requirements of position.
The noise level in the indoor work environment is moderate; in the outdoor environment is typically loud and may occasionally be extremely loud.
Required Travel:
The employee is required to travel throughout the County.

Computer and relevant software applications; calculator; telephone system; mobile phone; two-way radio.
Other Equipment:
A variety of light and/or heavy equipment (e.g. snow removal equipment, graders, dozers, tandem dump trucks, pickup trucks, rollers, backhoes, sweepers, loaders and rock rakes) used in Road & Bridge construction and maintenance.
