SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Fine & Performing Arts the Music Mentor responsible for teaching individual and group music lessons to individuals with disabilities that participate in the Fine & Performing Arts program.  The Music Mentor will work with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities to provide them with an opportunity to seek their own natural creativity through music.  This person will provide direction toward goals of achievement, promote listening and basic motor skills, memory, focus, team work and most importantly, personal self expression through music.   This position will focus on working with clients in the music program for public performances and OV and community events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Mentor and teach traditional styles of music and provide performance opportunities throughout the year to individuals served and oversee the daily operation of the program.
  2. Guide, support, train and supervise direct care, part-time staff and volunteers.
  3. Participate in direct care ratio and assist in daily direct care duties (i.e. lunch assistance, toileting, daily activities and bus duties).
  4. Implement requirements of Individual Support Plan (ISP).
  5. Work with Assistant Director to plan and coordinate music performances throughout the year.
  6. Represent the program on guest tours and community performances.
  7. Provide weekly/monthly program up-dates, monthly newsletter articles and quarterly participant progress reports.
  8. Attend weekly staff and one-on-one meetings.
  9. Set up and break down of all sound equipment needed for events and performances.
  10. Identify, plan and coordinate special performance groups.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position will supervise Fine & Performing Arts Direct Care Staff.
 
Position Requirements

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Ability to facilitate activities related to fine arts, music and/or recreational and life enrichment activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, co-workers and supervisors (verbal and written).
  • Ability to care, respond and work with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Must encompass professional demeanor.
  • Ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, gain knowledge and have initiative.
  • Basic knowledge of video creation and editing

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year verifiable work experience in related field of music/performing arts.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance or Music Education.
  • Preferred: Experience working with individuals with disabilities.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand 80% of a work day.
