Description

Federal Contract Requirements: Provide proof of COVID-19 Vaccination. Must be a U.S. Citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident

JOB PURPOSE:

The horticultural therapist will lead horticultural therapy and life-science-themed educational activities for migrant youth aged 13-17 years old using a trauma-informed care framework. The horticultural therapist will assist in the creation and planning of hands-on programming material as well as collaborate closely with the programming team.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead horticultural therapy and life-science themed educational activities
  • Create and maintain a safe and inclusive indoor and outdoor classroom environment
  • Collaborate with lesson planning and further program development
  • Assess and monitor learning, adjusting instruction as needed
  • Collaborate with other staff members
  • Coordinate the work of support personnel (aides, youth care workers)
  • Manage instructional materials and resources
  • Maintain all plant life used in horticultural therapy programming to include classroom garden beds.
  • Be responsible for the management of the 'Living Science Center' which will include but not be limited to a greenhouse, possibly chickens and goats
  • Meet departmental and program deadlines
 
Position Requirements

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture or a therapeutic discipline

EXPERIENCE:

  • Ability to manage a small greenhouse
  • Previous teaching experience
  • Experience with Trauma-Informed Care a plus

LICENSES:

  • Horticultural Therapy Certification

WORK LOCATION:

  • In-person at Pecos children's center.

OTHER: Operational needs may require occasional evenings or weekend supervision. Able and willing to travel 25% of annual time

Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.

EXCEPTIONS TO THESE CRITERIA MUST BE APPROVED BY THE DEPARTMENT HEAD.

 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

COMMUNICATION: Fluent English and Spanish language skills are required. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively via oral or written means.

COMPOSURE: Ability to remain calm and maintain self-control in the midst of difficult circumstances and emergencies. Ability to respond in a professional manner in all situations.

COMPUTER: Working knowledge of Outlook, Word and Excel; PowerPoint and Access a plus.

DECISION MAKING: Ability to think analytically and evaluate the impact of programming and educational activities. Ability to set work priorities and to evaluate and create solutions to work related problems.

TECHNICAL: Knowledge of clinical services and community resources.

 

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

Orientation: 5 hours

On the Job: 6 months to one year

 

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, WORK AIDS:

Multi-line telephone, computer, ten key calculators, printers, copiers, faxes.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Constant – Must be a hands-on instructor who can use all equipment needed to teach the specific course

Frequent – Ability to input data into computer, make calculations, complete paperwork, produce reports.

Occasional – Ability to lift, stack, load and move up to 50 pounds from varied heights.

Occasional – Ability to drive safely and recognize hazards.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoors: 50% - Office, enclosed area, dorm, tents, and residential environment; generally normal noise level

Outdoors: 50% - All-weather conditions and variable temperatures.

REPORTS TO: Horticultural Therapy Coordinator
