Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory (SHC) is a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school located in the heart of San Francisco, California. We provide academically rigorous, vibrant learning grounded in social justice and student centered pedagogy. Our entire community is committed to cultivating each student's unique talents and passions, providing myriad opportunities for students to discern and realize their individual intellectual, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual potential. SHC is a San Francisco Archdiocesan High School that is cosponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, District of San Francisco New Orleans and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, Province of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.

POSITION TITLE: College Advisor

SUPERVISED BY: Principal

FLSA STATUS: Full - time

EFFECTIVE DATE: August 2022

Position Summary
This position is a full-time, eleven month position. SHC college advisors work collaboratively and individually with students, families, teachers, school counselors, and colleges/universities to guide students throughout the college admissions process.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Model for students the characteristics of a Lasallian Vincentian Catholic educator;

  • Facilitate SHC’s mission and philosophy and Counseling and Advising Department outcomes (see https://www.shcp.edu/academics/counseling-advising);

  • Demonstrate commitment to equity and inclusion in learning, sometimes facilitating meetings with students and families at times most convenient to them, including evenings, weekends, and summer months;

  • Design and present college research, planning, and application workshops/seminars to groups of students and families at all grade levels;

  • Hold individual meetings with second-semester eleventh and twelfth-grade parents and students;

  • Collaborate to plan and supervise college tours;

  • Be proficient with accessing, analyzing, and communicating complex information and data to a variety of audiences and in a variety of media;

  • Keep accurate records of the advising process in college and career planning platform (Naviance), school learning management system (Schoology), and student information system (PowerSchool);

  • Write letters of recommendation for college admissions and scholarships, preparing and sending Secondary School Reports to colleges, universities and scholarship sources, and midyear reports as necessary or requested;

  • Prepare reports related to college application, admission, and matriculation for internal and external use;

  • Publicize scholarships and grant funding opportunities to advisees and their parents;

  • Continue to learn professionally, taking college admissions workshops, particularly those presented by UC, CSU, and the College Board;

  • Build strong relationships with admissions officers through membership in and attendance at WACAC & NACAC meetings;

  • Meet directly with college admissions officers at SHC and throughout the country;

  • Attend and participate in Counseling and Advising Department and learning team meetings and workshops;

  • Participate in the co-curricular life of the school;

  • Perform other duties as required.

 
Position Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree;

  • Extensive guidance and/or college admissions experience of at least three years;

  • Demonstrated understanding of the complex nature of the college counseling and college application processes, including knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Google Suite, college and career planning platforms, databases and social media;

  • Proven ability to work independently and with attention to detail and confidentiality;

  • A passion for working collaboratively to support students and families from diverse backgrounds along their college journey.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's and/or post graduate work in subject matter and/or counseling, such as Pupil Personnel Services Credential;

  • Experience in a Catholic school.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required;

  • Master's degree or equivalent strongly preferred.
