JOB SUMMARY

The overriding business objective for the Chief Engineer will be to maintain and grow AES as a world-recognized leader in aircraft electrical power generation systems for small to mid-sized business jets, UAVs and rotorcraft.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Demonstrate Electrical Starter and Generator Expertise. The successful candidate will be a recognized industry expert in the areas of generator design, rotating machine design, magnetics design, aircraft generators, and starters. Expertise in high current 28VDC, 115Vac, 270VDC, and variable frequency systems.
  • Capture new business. The ultimate objective for this position is to grow the power systems business through outstanding technical skills, excellent customer relationships, and building a reputation within the industry as the best source of aircraft power systems in our market segment. The primary goal of the Chief Engineer is to act as a trusted technical advisor to the customers and ultimately win new business as a result.
  • Grow customer relationships that build credibility as a leading expert in the design and certification of aircraft electrical power systems. The primary goal of the Chief Engineer will be to impress, gain confidence, and build credibility with key aircraft designers that Astronics AES provides the best system solution to aircraft power needs. By providing technical assistance to customers, building key relationships, and increasing credibility, the challenge is to build our reputation as the recognized industry leader of aircraft electrical power systems in our market segment. Success criteria will be to build, or foster existing relationships, with key technical leaders within our customer base. Successful technical presentations at industry trade shows are another way to build this reputation. The intent is to be a trusted advisor, so when a customer has a power system need, the first person they seek for advice will be the Chief Engineer.
  • Design Innovative Power Systems. The successful Chief Engineer will leverage their significant technical skill and experience to design new technology electrical power systems which offer substantial benefits in weight, cost, and/or reliability over tradition approaches. The Chief Engineer will lead topology selections, architect systems, and detail designs. Engineers and technicians will be provided to support the Chief Engineer in the details of implementing these designs.
  • Guide the customer to choose the best technical approach from a systems engineering perspective. Working in partnership with the customer, the Chief Engineer will take multiple customer requirements, which often have conflicting priorities, and acting as an industry expert identify the best technical solution for the customer and Astronics. Aircraft certification knowledge is a key consideration, along with safety, cost, weight, maintenance cost, and technical risk. Once the customer agrees to the chosen topology, the Chief Engineer needs to document the system requirements so that internal design teams at Astronics can perform the detailed design work. Evidence of success will be winning new customer content and well written system requirements of that content.
  • Lead the talent acquisition and technical development of motor design capability. A key goal of this position is to create a center of excellence, talent development, and knowledge base for successfully designing and producing rotating generators. The Chief Engineer will create design guidelines, best practices, and talent development of several key engineers to build an in-house design capability for rotating machines. In summary, growing key talent and assuring the quality of our designs are critical responsibilities of the Chief Engineer.
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: 20 years related experience desired. Must be a recognized industry expert in the areas of rotating generators, magnetics design, machine design and aircraft starters.
  • Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; advanced degree preferred.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a US Person (under ITAR rules) to be eligible.
  • Astronics AES is considered a federal sub-contractor and if Executive Order 14042 is reinstated, proof of full vaccination may be required as a condition of employment, subject to medical and religious accommodations.

This compensation range is specific to Washington State and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

At Astronics AES, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $180,677 - $288,613.
