SUMMARY

This position will lead the evaluation of the zoo’s impact and facilitate the zoo’s transformation into a learning organization that prioritizes results and continuous quality improvement. Under their leadership, the zoo will make measureable progress toward building a social movement for conservation and achieving the goals of the strategic plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • In alignment with the zoo’s strategic plan and Theory of Change, lead the zoo to develop and implement an evaluation strategy to assess the zoo’s impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Informed by the latest research in pro-environmental social innovation, behavioral science, and conservation psychology, collaborate with teams across the zoo to develop accountability structures and continuous improvement processes to help maximize the impact of zoo resources.
  • Regularly report to the Executive Leadership Team, the Senior Leadership Team, the zoo Board of Directors, including committees, and others on the zoo’s evaluation efforts and progress toward achieving its mission and annual goals.
  • Identify evaluation focus areas annually to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the strategic plan by deadlines set by the organization, participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of all subsequent strategic plans.
  • Represent the zoo in professional meetings, with donors, board members, the public and others.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on attitudes and behaviors, goals, and strategies related to evaluation, for the purpose of growing evaluation capacity across the organization. Support leaders and teams across the zoo to assess the efficacy of their work and suggest improvements in relation to the goals.
  • Provide overall directional leadership, motivation, and management to a team of staff responsible for programmatic evaluation, data analysis and visualization, and audience research.
  • Form and lead the zoo’s Social Change Workgroup, composed of staff members from across the zoo, to drive a culture of data-driven decision making, innovation, and continuous improvement across the zoo.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the zoo’s Social Change Advisory Committee, composed of experts in conservation psychology and other relevant fields.
  • Work with the Development team to develop fundraising initiatives, including applying for and receiving grants to support the zoo’s ongoing social change work and evaluation priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree from an accredited college or university in conservation psychology, behavioral science, sociology, data science, applied science, or related field and ten (10) or more years of experience in evaluation leadership; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four (4) or more years of management experience with both direct and indirect reports.
  • Experience in evaluation, statistics, and data visualization and expertise, or the ability to develop expertise, in conservation psychology and the assessment of social and behavioral change.
  • Experience integrating a commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all aspects of work, including the evaluation of programs and projects as well as the development and management of people and partnerships.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, particularly Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity. Ability to disseminate information effectively to appropriate levels.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to listen, give and receive feedback in a productive and professional manner. Able to translate vision into planning and implementation.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and requests and meet deadlines in a professional manner.
  • Ability to evaluate problems and to effectively solve them in a timely manner. Respond to concerns with empathy and inclusivity. Respond appropriately to conflict.
  • Ability to delegate responsibilities, work with others, and coach employees to develop their full potential. Provide helpful, behaviorally specific feedback to others. Regularly meet with employees to review their development progress and express confidence in their abilities to be successful. Engage team members in open and honest communication.
  • Ability to anticipate needs and challenges, take initiative, ask questions, and provide solutions to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Ability to identify and suggest changes that promote positive impacts with a lens for diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability to ensure strategic vision becomes alive through the departmental operations, processes, and policies. Identify the need for change, envision change, and empower employees as champions of change culture. Provide clear vision and communication regarding change.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team within diverse teams and environments while treating everyone with respect.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with audiences of different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in a way that is understandable and engaging to broad audiences; comfortable speaking to groups in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to participate and/or initiate external team interaction, such as working with board committees, attending zoo events, and fundraising events.
  • Ability to identify, cultivate, and maintain professional relationships with community leaders, partner organizations, and a complex stakeholder network.
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive presentation on controversial or complex topics to colleagues, board members, donors, and the public.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Proven track record of success in receiving grants.
  • Experience as a thought leader within an organization or field.
  • Experience in organizational change management leadership.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position may be required to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

PAY: $120,000-140,000/annually plus benefits 

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. A criminal background check will be required of the selected applicant.

  • As of November 24, 2021, employees working on or accessing zoo grounds are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If hired, you will be required to submit proof of vaccination by your first day of employment. 
  • People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine.
