Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Security Officer provides security services and maintains customer service to patients, visitors, and staff throughout the Tuba City Regional Healthcare Corporation (TCRHCC), surrounding satellite clinic locations and Kaibeto Creek Independent Living Center.   Respond to all alarms, emergency calls and respond appropriately to all incident and life-threatening situations keeping safety as a priority.  Required to maintain flexible work schedules in order to accommodate overtime, weekend and/or evening shifts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responsible for providing direct observation of patients as directed by the nursing plan of care and under the supervision of the nursing staff and/or nursing department supervisor. Responsible for assisting nursing staff to create, maintain and provide a safe environment.
  2. Responsible for maintaining a professional appearance, carrying hospital identification card, hand cuffs, handheld radio, expandable baton, non-lethal chemical spray, safety vest and a flashlight during tour of duty. Exhibit a courteous demeanor when answering the telephone, using the two-way radio, or personally helping individuals in day-to-day encounters
  3. Uses appropriate and approved restraining techniques correctly.
  4. Adhere to established policies and procedures. Assists in interpreting regulations, requirements and procedures; provides technical assistance to resolve security-related issues. 
  5. Screens all persons entering or leaving hospital building during pre-designated hours.
  6. Conducts regular security patrols of all TCRHCC property, satellite clinic locations and the Kaibeto Creek Independent Living Center so that the facility is adequately locked and/or secured during pre-designated hours. Checks doors and windows of building to ensure they are tightly closed and locked; notes in written log any unlocked doors/windows; submits information to supervisor. Unlocks buildings/doors after checking for identification and compliance with TCRHCC policies.
  7. Will not leave the assigned patrol areas without being properly relieved. Provides relief to security staff for lunch, daily breaks, leave, and act as a back-up for the security officers as necessary to ensure proper security staffing.
  8. Ensures accurate, legible, and efficient incident reports are completed i.e. daily logs, completed offense reports at shifts end, and clocking in and out in the timekeeping system.
  9. Shall respond to all calls for security services throughout TCRHCC property and satellite clinic locations including disruption, altercations; reported theft within building; report of accident, serious injury or death; report of fire, and safety or security hazards.
  10. Provides assistance to staff and/or police with emergency room and/or inpatient as the situation warrants; handle situations about the relatives of the patients getting aggressive with nurses and doctors at times. Escorts people/property to desired destination when monies, documents or safety of property or persons is a concern
  11. Reviews video surveillance during investigation and when directed
  12. Addresses and reports security issues promptly and maintains communication with individuals and/or groups involved.
  13. Discusses and immediately reports any problems and issues/concerns with the Lead Security Officer, Assistant Security Manager and Security Manager. 
  14. Secure lost and found articles. Receive, tag, log, and make secure all lost and found articles. Attempt to contact owners, if known, and make arrangements for return of property.  Keep lost and found storage area clean, neat, and secure. Make proper disposition of articles not claimed within holding period as set out in Departmental Policy and Procedures Manual.
  15. Participates in the current fire and disaster plan and conducts minor animal control.
  16. Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
  17. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
  18. Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned. 

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:

Work requires frequent and prolonged walking; standing; reaching with hands and arms; talking and hearing; use hands to fingers, handle, or feel; push/pull 10-100lbs; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; bending, and carrying, lifting up to 50lbs with occasional lifting anywhere up to 100lbs.  Requires availability for responding to emergencies at night (sleep may be disrupted).  Speak in audible tones so that other may understand clearly; articulate information in an emergency situation; use physical agility and strength to defend self and detain person using force if necessary; and have the visual acuity necessary to observe and comprehend human movement. Requires distance, color and peripheral vision with depth perception and ability to adjust focus as needed. Requires the ability to hear alarms; client calls; overhead announcements; and instructions from physician/department staff. Must be able to hear, understand, respond to communications through electronic portable devices e.g. two-way radio. Requires prolonged repetitive motion actions of both feet and hands; ability to grasp simple/light and firm/heavy; in addition to frequent ability for fine dexterity.

Must participate in the physical fitness evaluation completed by Department Head:

Mental:

Exercises independent judgment to ensure appropriate action is taken on issues related to security; assures fairness based on the needs related to patient care and accessibility for housing assignments, maintenance, and safety, in cooperation with other departments.

Work Environment:

Position may require prolong work in outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold; or extreme heat. May require frequent work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles. This position requires infrequent exposure to wet, humid conditions; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; risk of radiation; and, vibration. Typical noise level in position is moderate. 

 
Position Requirements

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or GED

Experience:

Must have six (6) months of experience with providing security services to a large organization, school or health care facility.

(Acceptable experience includes services in the armed services that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.)

Certification:

Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association (AHA), if none must obtain within ninety (90) days of employment hire date.

Other Skills and Abilities:

A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers.  All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas:

  • Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences.
  • Positive working relationships with others
  • Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints and no record of felony or misdemeanor convictions for fraud or dishonesty; criminal background checks are mandatory; no record of complaints regarding “conflict of interest” related to prior or current employment.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret written material, communicate effectively via telephone, written or electronic media or in person; ability to plan and organize work and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Complete Observation of Behavioral/Suicidal Patient Sitter Competency Training
  • Must maintain and have a valid State Driver’s License with no restrictions
