Senior Accountant 

Description

Under general direction, candidate will perform the more complex and responsible professional accounting work, including auditing, analyzing, and verifying financial records, preparing financial and statistical reports, providing information to City Council and staff regarding accounting practices and procedures, and reconciling general ledger accounts.

Exercise a high level of discretion and independent judgment in performing the full range of routine to complex accounting and financial record-keeping functions

Researches and analyzes technical transactions to resolve questions and validate data; ensures fiscal accountability and fund integrity for transactions and supporting documentation

Provides professional and technical guidance and training to other staff in accounting processes and procedures.

Assists in writing and reviewing financial reports; prepares reports to take to various committees and boards.

Prepares a variety of financial statements, reports and financial functions related to the City budget and annual audits; and performs related duties as assigned.

Support and assist accounting staff with month end and year end close processes

 
Position Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field from an accredited college or university

3-5 years of experience preferred

Leadership/staff development experience is preferred

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and budgeting as applied to municipal government

Thorough knowledge of accounting terminology, methods, procedures, and equipment, principles and procedures of financial record keeping and reporting, and knowledge of audit practices

Demonstrated ability to work in a leadership role

Must be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite or similar software

Must possess good oral/written communication skills and have the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external customers.

Must possess the ability to prepare and maintain various reports, as required or assigned.

 
Physical/Environmental Requirements Mobility to work in typical office settings using standard office equipment is required. In addition, vision to read printed materials and computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
