Description

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Responsible for medical record review of orders and clinical documentation to capture all applicable nursing/ancillary and/or procedural revenue based on hospital charge policy and criteria.
  • Communicates with clinical staff and leadership to prevent and/or correct documentation deficiencies that are leading to revenue loss for their department.
  • Coordinates the Emergency Department charge audit process by entering charge capture data into tracking tools and analyzes audit findings for improved opportunities.
  • Participates in chargemaster (CDM) maintenance efforts by reviewing whether charges accurately reflect provided services/supplies are consistent with industry best practices.
  • Collaborates with Patient Financial Services leadership to develop education plans to assist Emergency Department leaders in achieving optimal reimbursement; may coordinate staff training.
  • Networks with revenue integrity leaders from other organizations to ensure organizational performance is reflective of general industry trends.
  • Maintains knowledge of and adherence to code of conduct standards, confidentiality agreements, and Hancock Regional’s mission statement.

QUALIFICATIONS:

JOB SPECIFIC CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Aptitude for detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Ability to abstract relevant clinical and demographic information from the medical record for highest specificity of coding and reimbursement purposes.
  • Has a good foundation of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding and reimbursement guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review medical documentation in order to capture all applicable revenue for the Emergency Department.
  • Place accounts on stop bill if additional chart documentation is requested.
  • Monitor weekly stop bill accounts to assure timely release.
  • Abstracts relevant clinical and demographic information from the medical record.
  • Serves as a coding resource for Patient Financial Services
  • Refers coding and system questions to the Director/Supervisor in a timely manner for determination and guideline development.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Remote coding agreement signed and approved by Director.
 
Position Requirements

MANDATORY LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: High School Diploma or GED with additional technical or coding certification recommended. Technical/Vocational Degree in Healthcare field preferred.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Working knowledge of the ICD-10-CM and CPT 4 coding systems, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Experience in computer operations.
  • A minimum of two (2) years coding experience or equivalent, preferred.
  • Types accurately at least 30 WPM.
  • Mandatory Continuing Education: Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance (including Confidentiality), Infection Control, and education required by regulatory, accreditation bodies, scope of practice, and/or Hancock Regional Hospital.
