SUMMARY

This position, in collaboration with department leadership and staff will oversee the department’s learning management system, create the infrastructure for new online engagement opportunities, and manage media-based projects including development and implementation, tracking grant spending, advertising, staff training, and scheduling.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Oversee and administer the department’s Learning Management System (LMS) and department website in support of department goals and zoo strategic outcomes.
  • Facilitate internal partnerships (IT, Animal Care, etc.) to create and deliver highly engaging distance learning programs.
  • Develop the infrastructure for synchronous and asynchronous online programs, including overall program concept and development, equipment and supply purchases, advertising, staff training, and reservations.
  • Produce educational media products for schools, libraries, organizations, individuals, and public audiences, including designing programs for digital delivery, filming and editing, and assisting publication/delivery as needed.
  • Facilitate development of a suite of live and recorded broadcasts in collaboration with Learning & Innovation, Animal Care, Wildlife Conservation, Horticulture, other zoo stakeholders, and outside partners in alignment with current strategic priorities.
  • Participate in and facilitate meetings, trainings, and professional development to discuss, plan, and develop departmental strategy, marketing plans and professional growth plans around online and distance learning programs and platforms.
  • Provide technical, logistical, and/or procedural support to customers and users of distance learning equipment, web sites and services.
  • Train and support instructors and staff in the use of audio visual equipment, software, applications, and effective presentation techniques.
  • Work with management to track grant funded program expenses.
  • Establish evaluation plan and collect data to assess effectiveness of distance learning programs in meeting learning and institutional outcomes. Collect, manage, and report program statistics.
  • Research and write articles, blog posts, fliers, publications, grant report/narrative information, communications/interpretive materials, and other promotional and supporting materials.
  • Under the direction of department leadership, and with the assistance of the Development Department, write grants and grant reports, and participate in donor cultivation tours, events, and other fundraising initiatives.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems with distance learning equipment or applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college in a related field and four (4) or more years of related experience; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience administering a Learning Management System (LMS) and eLearning authoring tools (such as Storyline or Captivate).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to incorporate different perspectives, and work with diverse populations and stakeholders (staff, partners, volunteers, visitors, etc.).
  • Demonstrated project management skills that include attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to creatively manage projects with many moving parts.
  • Experience communicating science in both formal and informal settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in educational media communications and/or instructional design.
  • Open to experimentation, learning, and adjustments along the way; ability to push through ambiguity to deliver results.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and communication skills. High attention to detail and the ability to audit work for accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to listen patiently and attentively, ability to express self clearly and effectively, and ability to adapt communication based on audience and purpose with inclusivity.
  • Proficient and experienced in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams; as well as Learning Management Systems, web development, integrated software system and applications, and videoconference interfaces.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks and schedules in a fast-paced environment with multiple agendas, and requests and meet deadlines in a professional manner.
  • Ability to employ best practices associated with position, with an approach to accuracy, while displaying an on-going commitment to learning and self-improvement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with audiences of different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within diverse teams and environments, while treating everyone with respect.
  • Ability to work varying hours and a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Experience with Docebo.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This position is required to frequently lift up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a typical office environment and/or outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. May travel to offsite areas conducting programs as needed. During COVID-19, there may be a combination of remote work and onsite work.

Pay: $60-65,000 annually plus benefits 

Employment Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years old. A criminal background check will be required of the selected applicant.
