Description

Opportunity Finance Network (OFN) seeks a qualified, intellectually curious candidate to help us produce and advance research on community development financial institutions (CDFIs). The Associate, Research will be a key member of OFN’s research department, reporting to the Senior Vice President, Research. They will be responsible for contributing to OFN’s research agenda and for helping to maximize the use of data and research to elevate the work of CDFIs. The Associate will be mentored as they learn about CDFIs and develop professional skills in qualitative and quantitative research methods, analytical thinking, oral communication and writing, and project management.

Currently OFN has an on-balance sheet loan portfolio of $150 million and manages capital on-and off-balance sheet of nearly $1 billion and has plans to bring additional $1 billion in new private capital to the industry.

This position is based in Washington, D.C. All staff currently work a hybrid schedule.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collect, clean, manage, and analyze quantitative data and perform statistical analyses using standard statistical software packages.
  • Assist with fielding OFN’s annual survey to its CDFI members, which includes updating and programming the survey questionnaire, answering respondents’ questions, validating, cleaning, and analyzing survey data, and developing publications.
  • Help to maintain quantitative databases that store data collected by OFN and publicly available data from the Census, CDFI Fund, Small Business Administration, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and other sources.
  • Assist with qualitative data collection by developing interview guides, scheduling interviews, taking interview notes, conducting interviews, and helping to summarize interview data.
  • Assist in the development and execution of project timelines and coordinate with colleagues to complete tasks.
  • Track and assist in fulfilling data requests submitted by other OFN departments, CDFI members, and external partners.
  • Produce data visualizations to summarize and report on research findings.
  • Assist in developing research publications by drafting sections and preparing exhibits and tables.
  • Write blog posts to communicate research findings to diverse audiences.
  • Conduct literature reviews and keep abreast of current research on CDFIs.
  • Provide administrative support to the research department.
  • Assist with other research activities as requested.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 5+ years direct work experience required in lieu of a degree.
  • 1-2 years of demonstrated work experience or internship experience required.
  • Experience with statistical packages (e.g., Stata, R) and database management software (e.g., SQL, Access) is required.
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS), data visualization software (e.g., Tableau, Power BI), and survey software (e.g., Qualtrics) is preferred.
  • Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Excellent writing, oral communication, and analytical thinking skills.
  • Substantive knowledge and interest in community development, CDFIs, financial institutions, and nonprofits.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and discretion.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, balance the demands of working on multiple tasks simultaneously, and collaborate on teams.
  • Light travel required (<5% of time).
  • Job involves normal physical requirements for an office position.
  • No extraordinary physical requirements beyond ability to travel.
