K-6 Academic Support Specialist

OVERVIEW: The person selected for this position must have a professional approach, and conduct himself or herself as such when working collaboratively with Port Angeles School District Staff as well as Lower Elwha Klallam Tribal Staff. It is imperative to be able to tutor and work well with children as well as advocate for children while remaining professional with all parties.

WORK LOCATION(s): Dry Creek Elementary & LEKT Tribal Library

SUPERVISED BY: Education Director

POSITION STATUS: Full-time

SALARY LEVEL: $20.00

WORK SCHEDULE: DC M-F, 8-1:30PM & LEKT Library M-F, 1:30PM-4:30 PM

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  • Provide education support, direct tutoring services, guidance and tutorial services to LEKT Native American children K-6th grades as needed in the Port Angeles School District, including the After School Drop-in Program at Lower Elwha Klallam Library.
  • Assists students in a liaison role with other appropriate school personnel, families and community services to assist in the student's achievement status.
  • Identify struggling students through data review and referrals and connect students with the academic support services offered within the community and at the school site.
  • Attend conferences and training as required or requested.
  • Supervise and/or help distribute the USDA Snack Preparation for Academic Support Drop-in Program.
  • Provide students with classroom academic support; knowledge of Eureka math a plus.
  • Working collaboratively with PASD professionals.
  • Create forms when necessary for the functioning of the ASP located in the tribal library.
  • Maintain data for USDA and the DBHR Grants.
  • Maintain accurate records of children participating in all activities offered.
  • Work competently with tribal youth, adults and the community.
  • Assures ongoing communication with Education Director regarding activities with our youth.
  • Provide regular status reports to direct supervisor.
  • Coordinate and work closely with the current Native American Interventionist located at Dry Creek Elementary School
  • Check in daily with supervisor
  • Other related duties as assigned
 
Position Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • AA Degree required; BA Degree desirable; will consider applicant in the education process.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with clean driving record and insurable.
  • First Aid and Child CPR card as well as keep updated
  • Physical ability to move quickly in order to respond to children who are very active and may need redirection in order to ensure their safety or the safety of others.
  • Pass Criminal History Background check.
  • Ability to be a sensitive and mature individual who relates well to others.
  • Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Must demonstrate a high level of oral and written communication skills as well as Microsoft Office knowledge and skills; such as operating the Internet, Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Must be 18 years or older

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by the Position

  • Promotes positive working relationships with students, parents, families and school district personnel.
  • Must be patient, and ready to learn additional skills in working with young children.
  • Creativity is welcomed.
  • Teaching experience or at minimum tutoring experience
  • Ability to work with Native American people and to establish good rapport with students and their families.
  • Give all children and families dignity and respect
  • Ability to be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others
  • Ability to provide consistent expectations for children’s behaviors
  • Ability to relate well with children
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to follow work schedule consistently

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS

  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Drug Free Workplace policies
  • Must have current Child First Aid and CPR, USDA Food Handler’s Certification within 30 days of employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work involves sitting, standing, walking, lifting
