Work location: Lower Elwha Klallam Education Department

Supervised by: Jessica Egnew, Education Director

Position Status: Full-time permanent

Salary level: $18.00 hourly Work Schedule: 8-4:30, M-F, occasional evenings

Overview: The Education Program Assistant will provide support to the Education Department through the direction of the Education Director. The Assistant will provide information, support and guidance to any age student or potential student regarding their academic pursuits and progress. Will provide support to all programs within the Education Department as needed.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Meet with students concerning questions and issues regarding various aspects of the academic process.
  • Tutoring K-12 when needed.
  • Assist in managing and maintaining confidential higher education student files, including the auditing of files.
  • May schedule and coordinate student events.
  • Contact higher education students regularly.
  • Copy materials as needed for the department.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Operating System; Word, Excel and Outlook a must to create profession letters, memos and flyers as well as e-mail.
  • Prepare materials for workshops and trainings.
  • Ability to be professional in all settings; for example proper phone etiquette.
  • Ability to listen and understand direction from supervisor.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers, students and other tribal staff in a professional and personable manner.
  • Must be able to share office space with co-workers.
  • May need to drive a van to transport youth.
  • Must show initiative in their position and be able to make sound decisions.
  • Ability to help students complete college Financial Aid paperwork; FAFSA and seek other available scholarships and grants.
  • Ability to support either of the after school drop in programs (LEKT Library or Steven's Middle School), which includes but is not limited to preparing snack, homework support, reading to and with students and monitoring computer usage.
 
Position Requirements

Desired Qualifications:

  • AA Degree required; BA Degree desirable but will consider applicant who is in the education process.
  • Pass Criminal History Background check.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License with clean driving record and insurable.
  • First Aid and Child CPR card within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Food Handler’s Permit within 30 days of employment.
  • A physical exam with results in letter format that states applicant is free of communicable diseases, including results of a negative TB test prior to employment.
  • Physical ability to move quickly in order to respond to children who are very active and may need redirection in order to ensure their safety or the safety of others.
  • Must pass UA testing prior to employment.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of oral and written communication skills
  • Microsoft Office proficiency, Outlook, Word and Excel, Publisher.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required by Position

  • Promote positive working relationships with students, parents and other departments within the tribal organization.
  • Tutoring ability such as math, reading and writing.
  • Treat all families’ with dignity and respect.
  • Ability to be sensitive to the feelings and needs of others.
  • Ability to provide consistent expectations for children’s behaviors.
  • Ability to relate well with children.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribes Drug Free Workplace policies.

As with all positions of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, this position is Indian Preference in hiring.
