General Purpose

The Shop Mechanic is responsible for maintenance of fleet equipment and trucks in the shop including repairs. This position maintains heavy construction vehicles and equipment such as backhoes, mini trackhoes, hydro excavators, air brake trailers, lowboys, Class 6, 7 and 8 trucks, other heavy equipment and fleet vehicles. This position requires all fleet and equipment to be kept in good working order, organizing necessary repairs to keep equipment and fleet working in the field. This position responds promptly to requests for repairs, both scheduled and unscheduled, by assessing needs within time constraints.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs diagnostic inspections to ensure optimal performance of the equipment
  • Performs necessary repairs or replacements to maintain working order of fleet and equipment
  • Completes Department of Transportation (DOT) Annual Inspections and Preventive Maintenance on fleet, trailers, and equipment
  • Welds and fabricates various projects and/or repairs using MIG and stick welds
  • Works with a variety of engines including small, diesel, and gas engines
  • Overhauls and repairs clutch systems, brake systems, charging systems, hydraulic systems, starter systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, electrical systems and other major components of fleet and equipment
  • Uses independent judgement and makes recommendations, based on expertise, concerning repair or replacement of equipment and vehicles
  • Completes fleet and equipment repairs primarily in the shop
  • Provides service and customer support to internal clients with mechanical needs
  • Disassembles and assembles vehicles and equipment parts using lifts, hand tools and various other instruments
  • Prepares and maintains inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Trains others in the proper methods and processes to perform equipment repair, inspection and preventative maintenance
  • Maintains maintenance repair records, utilizing paper files and electronic maintenance software
  • Advises and guides equipment operators on proper use of equipment
  • Clean, maintain and organize equipment, tools, and the general work area

Position Requirements

Job Qualifications

Experience:

  • Five (5+) plus years working as a heavy equipment, fleet, diesel or shop Mechanic
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year to year basis

Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:

  • A valid State Driver’s License is required
  • Must have own tools
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License – A (CDL-A) is required within 90 days of being hired
  • Candidates must pass Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, a DOT regulated physical as a requirement of the job and pass a pre-employment drug screen

Education or Formal Training:

  • HS Diploma or GED
