Title: Biological Drug Development Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

Duration: 12 weeks

We invite you to join our Summer Intern Team– and work with a world-class group of people who are creative, ambitious, and driven to excel. Our Research and Development Scientists are transforming the industry. Currently the Research and Development function is offering an internship opportunity to conduct research to support established research programs and projects in collaboration with other Research & Development scientists.

Objective/Goal:

The objective is to learn more about the cause of biological drug instability during development. The project is designed to introduce the student to critical steps in drug development and source of instability that needs to be considered in Drug product container selection, device design, and shelf-life strategy. Additionally, state-of-the-art instruments and techniques will be used to increase our understanding of the biological instability of molecules when stressed and under less desired conditions.

This project also provides an opportunity to collaborate with our data science team in a cross-functional collaborative environment and introduces the use of machine learning for biopharmaceutical development.

Duties:

  • Actively learning about the objectives of the project and conducting a literature search to learn about the science
  • Following the proper guidelines and training for using the instruments and generating scientifically sound data
  • Keeping track of the produced data in a lab notebook, Excel file, etc
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving if needed during the project
  • Participating in the planned event and activity for summer interns 2022, including presentation of data at the science fair by end of the internship.
 
Position Requirements
  • Enrolled in a master's program within chemical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or related field.
  • Basic understanding of proteins, large biological molecules, especially antibodies are essential
  • Experience working with chromatography techniques especially SEC is a plus
  • Experience working on antibody characterization or particle formation is a plus
  • Good communication skills, writing and record-keeping
  • Must take initiative, demonstrate leadership skills, be eager to learn
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint
    Ability to relocate to Gaithersburg, MD for the summer

To participate in the AstraZeneca Intern Program,

Students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
• Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program, returning to the academic program following AstraZeneca assignment
• At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
