Position: Youth Counselor (In one of our core areas highlighted below).

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan is seeking a qualified individual who will assist in the successful operation of the Summer Camp programs. Core camp components include: STEM, eSports, College and Career Readiness/Entrepreneurship, and Performing Arts. The Camp Counselor has the closest relationship with the campers in their group and will not only be an influential role model, but also directly impact the children's overall camp experience. Above and beyond all of the day-to-day challenges of being a Camp Counselor, it is one of the most rewarding positions and crucial for a successful camp program.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage groups as assigned for youth between 7-14.
  • Provide a safe and healthy environment for campers.
  • Ensure cleanliness and safety of camp spaces and equipment.
  • Daily supervision of campers ensuring all an enjoyable and beneficial experience, both in the camp community and on field trips.
  • Daily supervision of staff, student aides and volunteers within your group.
  • Creating and leading activities in assigned program areas, motivating campers to participate in an 'organized' and safe activity.
  • Keep immediate supervisor informed daily of any concerns or problems concerning campers and facilities.
  • Responsibility of being the point person within your group, during all activities and trips.
  • Develop lesson plans and maintain daily records and attendance logs.
  • Follow all BGCSM guidelines regarding summer trips and travel.
  • Implement and complete all required camp surveys and evaluations.
  • Adhere to all BGCSM Youth and Teen Program standards

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in planning/involvement of special activities such a daily/weekly themes, field trips and all camp activities.
  • Perform specific scheduled duties such as arrival and departure, and lunch duty.
  • Attend 30 hours of pre-camp staff training.
  • Fully support Summer Learning Initiatives.
 
Position Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school education; college preferred.
  • Two years of experience coordinating program specific activities, preferably in an academic, after school, camp or recreational setting.
