Salary: $13.57/hourly

Position Summary:

Under close supervision, assists in organizing and conducting recreational activities for the Tohono O'odham Nation Recreation Centers according to established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Emphasis will be placed on programs activities for youth.

The work is normally reviewed in progress and upon completion of each assignment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; most aspects of the work tasks are covered by detailed instructions or procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in planning and organizing activities such as dances, carnivals, tournaments, special events, arts and crafts, athletic events and sports activities, senior citizen’s programs, and special interest classes.
  • Works with community groups to support the recreation program services.
  • Maintains recreation facility in a clean and orderly condition
  • Ensures compliance with all safety procedures in supervising children during recreation activities.
  • Attends and participates in weekly staff meetings.
  • Ensures the appropriate and safe use of materials and equipment; notifies supervisor of any loss or damage to equipment and replacement supplies.
  • Drives van to transport participants to and from centers as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining human relations such as courtesy, patience, leadership, and enthusiasm when interacting with recreational facility participants such as youth, the elderly, and the disabled.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with other individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and demonstrate leadership and team-building skills with empathy and enthusiasm.

  • Ability to travel within the interior/exterior boundaries of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma and six months work experience working with youth organized recreational activities, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must obtain certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and First Aid within the first six months of hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire a criminal background and National FBI check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver’s license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements to receive a driver’s permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham Language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee may be exposed to various weather conditions.

About the Organization The Tohono O'odham Nation is a federally-recognized tribe that includes approximately 28,000 members occupying tribal lands in Southwestern Arizona. The Nation is the second largest reservations in Arizona in both population and geographical size, with a land base of 2.8 million acres and 4,460 square miles, approximately the size of the State of Connecticut. Its four non-contiguous segments total more than 2.8 million acres at an elevation of 2,674 feet.
