Description

The Human Resources Generalist ensures the effective and efficient HR administration across the organization by performing a wide variety of tasks such as employee relations, recruiting, benefits administration, training and development, etc. The incumbent is organized; self-motivated; effectively manages multiple priorities often under deadline; ensures accurate, timely, and compliant outputs; is a diplomatic and effective communicator; and, is able to work with a diverse group of people with a broad base of skills and qualifications. The HR Generalist supervises the HR Associate, providing direction, mentorship, guidance so they may effectively support HR’s tasks and priorities.

Essential Functions

The following essential functions are representative for the HR Generalist in its entirety – including but not limited to:

  • Manages recruitment process/applicant pipeline: writes/posts job announcements; coordinates telephone screens and in person interviews; conducts reference/background checks; prepares offer letters; creates schedules/ensures adequate onboarding/orientation, etc.
  • Manages training and certification programs with internal and external stakeholders on a range of topics such as OSHA safety requirements; first aid/CPR/AED; equipment use/best practices; harassment prevention; management training on hiring and EEOC; project management; time management, etc.
  • Works with Directors, to ensure/manage professional development and training schedules for all staff including training on diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Contributes to our equity-informed and inclusive work environment by taking an active role in promoting practices that support diversity, inclusion, and belonging including recruiting, hiring, retaining, and supporting a diverse workforce.
  • Periodically conducts compensation/benefit reviews; salary benchmarking.
  • Assists with benefit renewals and administration including health, dental, vision, retirement, disability, life insurance, workers compensation, COBRA, FSA and commuting benefits, etc. 
  • Assists and advises the retirement subcommittee aimed at analyzing, evaluating, and providing direction for the retirement plan(s) maintained by the organization.
  • Reviews/submits billing for employee benefit programs; serves as a liaison between benefit brokers and Casey Trees.
  • Directs HR strategies, systems, tactics and procedures organization-wide; monitors appropriate impact metrics and suggests changes based on results.
  • Provides direction, support, mentorship, and guidance for the HR Associate.
  • Develops, recommends, implements, and monitors personnel policies and procedures based upon the needs of the organization and in response to local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Writes HR documents to ensure that written text is concise, compliant, and adheres to confidentiality protocols for privileged and confidential information.
  • Maintains confidential employee records and manages the HRIS/payroll software system.
  • Manages semi-monthly payroll processing and time record keeping.
  • Supports employee team-building activities, i.e. awards, recognition programs, birthdays, etc.
  • Assists in disciplinary procedure administration, follow-up and counseling for performance improvement.
  • Maintains general knowledge of local, state, and federal labor laws.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

The incumbent manages the HR Associate.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted primarily in an office setting, but the incumbent is occasionally required to work outside year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather.

Physical Demands

  • While this is primarily a desk job, all CT employees may engage in tree planting/related activities in outdoor environments, year-round in the heat, cold and inclement weather and must have suitable clothing.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to talk, hear, stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs., lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool, etc.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is an exempt position, 40 hours a week. The incumbent must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed.

Travel

Travel is primarily local in DC, MD, and VA, although some out of the area travel and overnights may be expected.

 
Position Requirements
  • Three to five years’ demonstrated success in the HR profession
  • Professional demeanor; superior written and oral communications skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Creativity, flexibility, diplomacy, and positive spirit necessary
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team, and to manage multiple activities simultaneously
  • Ability to establish, track, and meet deadlines, often under pressure
  • Working knowledge of HR systems and databases
  • Excellent listening, negotiation, and presentation skills
  • Ability to build and manage productive interpersonal relationships at all levels of the company
  • Working knowledge of labor laws and HR best practices
  • Able to work with counsel to address issues as they arise
  • BS degree in Human Resources or related field preferred
