Title: Biochemistry & Data Science Summer Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

Duration: 12 weeks

AstraZeneca is a global, innovation-driven biopharmaceutical business that focuses on the discovery, development and commercialization of small molecule and biologic prescription medicines. AstraZeneca is pioneering innovative research and exploring novel pathways across key therapeutic areas, including respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity; cardiovascular and metabolic disease; oncology; neuroscience; and infection and vaccines.

We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a bachelor's degree in biochemistry or similar field with strong data science and programming knowledge.

  1. Compile experimental data on product post-translational modifications (PTMs) under heat stress
  2. Associate experimental data with relevant metadata describing experimental conditions
  3. Generate 3D models of these proteins in the absence of experimental structural data
  4. Implement a machine-learning based approach to predict PTMs that may form under heat stress based on structural properties

It is expected that ~90% of the effort involved in training a machine learning model is data curation. Based on literature search, the student will identify physical and chemical properties that may be important to deamidation. As the predictive tool they are developing is likely to be most valuable during the early development process, when little experimental data is available, the student will use homology modeling to predict the 3D structure of these proteins given only the primary
