Salary: $184,287.58/annually

Position Summary:

The incumbent serves as the Deputy Chief Dental Officer for the Dental Branch and is responsible for managing the Dental Branch while performing a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or health problems. Assist in the Dental Department’s strategic goals and objectives, professional leadership, and staff development and supervision.

Scope of Work:

The position is located at the TONHC Hospital and Clinics. The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Chief Dental Officer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Assist the Chief Dental Officer in the leadership of the Dental Branch; serves as acting Chief Dental Officer in his/her absence.
  • Oversees day-to-day management of the dental clinic as assigned by the Chief Dental Officer.
  • Perform a full range of professional dental duties in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases and dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.
  • Provides dental services, including quality and quantity consistent with the dental program policies.
  • Reviews patient's medical charts for evidence of disease or abnormalities which could be adversely affected by dental treatment and takes necessary precautions to ensure safe and effective treatment.
  • Performs oral examinations to include inspection of hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and ensures that exam results are appropriately recorded in the patient's chart.
  • Diagnoses pathological or irregular conditions.
  • Develops patient's treatment plans and ensures proper referral of patients for necessary medical evaluation or specialty care, if beyond the scope of general dental practice.
  • Ensures that patients understand the proposed treatment plan.
  • Request dental radiographs and perform radiographic interpretation.
  • Administer local anesthesia.
  • Perform restoration of complex and straightforward cavities with standard and approved materials: amalgam, composite, etc.
  • Serve as the senior dentist for professional dental staff, performing specialties such as pediatric dentistry, prosthetic dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics.
  • Refer patients with conditions requiring treatment beyond his/her expertise for treatment to specialists.
  • Educates patients and parents of patients on maintaining proper oral health.
  • Communicate to the dental staff treatment plans.
  • Prescribes medicates as necessary.
  • Documents medications, diagnoses, treatments, and consultations in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Supervises department staff; provides coaching, counseling, training, and feedback to employees; assigns, reviews, and delegates work and job responsibilities to designated staff.
  • Hires, evaluates, disciplines, and develops staff.
  • Direct the work of professional, technical, and administrative staff.
  • Develop the dental clinic’s monthly schedule with coordination from the Chief, dental assistant supervisor, and satellite Chief Dental Officers. Plan, prepare and adjust work schedules daily to meet objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Makes changes in work and assignments of tasks to improve workflow and dental services as needed for constantly changing daily operations.
  • Recommends changes and improvements relating to services, staffing, operations, and expansion. Represents the department at institutional meetings, activities, and external agencies and organizations as assigned.
  • In consultation with the Chief, devises and implements methods to control and assess the quality and effectiveness of work or services provided by assigned personnel.
  • Serves on committees and assists with projects as assigned by the Chief.
  • Works with the Chief and dental assistant supervisor to determine employee training needs and develop Individual Development Plans (IDP) for the staff.
  • Assures that all policies and procedures comply with professional guidelines, the Joint Commission standards, OSHA, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Oversees scheduling of patients and ensuring supplies are on hand for procedures.
  • Oversee and administer non-personal service contracts for the dental program.
  • Serves as approval official for purchasing supplies and equipment. Processes invoices for payment of contract services.
  • Interact with outside providers, facilities, and laboratories concerning patient cases.
  • Implements comply and monitor safety rules and regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of trends in dentistry.
  • Participate as a member on interdisciplinary committees and special projects and activities.
  • Maintains and submits required reports and records.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of current dental technology, terminology, dental anatomy, dental equipment, medicines, oral hygiene and preventive dentistry.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge and ability to use dental software.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA-related rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of professional dentistry as evidenced by graduation from an accredited school of dentistry and licensure to practice as a dentist in any state.
  • Knowledge of medical diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease as they relate to the care and treatment of the teeth to perform bedside prophylaxis.
  • Knowledge or ability to recognize common dental disorders and conditions such as inflamed tissue and tooth decay and perform intra-oral procedures treat these conditions.
  • Skill in treating patients with tact, courtesy, and respect.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Skill with reading results of dental x-rays and tests and communicating results clearly and accurately.
  • Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and financial reports.
  • Skill in supervising, training, and evaluating assigned staff.
  • Ability to react quickly and make effective decisions in an emergency.
  • Ability to use dental diagnostic and manual skills.
  • Ability to respect cultural and traditional Native American beliefs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
 
Position Requirements

MinimumQualifications:

  • Graduate of a dental school accredited by the American Dental Association’s (ADA’s) Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • A current, full, and unrestricted license in any state of the U.S. or the District of Columbia.
  • CPR Certification.
  • Advanced general practice residency in both clinical and program administration preferred.
  • Three years of supervisory experience preferred.
  • A verifiable record of continuing education and post-graduate study in various aspects of dentistry.
  • Experience in a Native American community dental clinic preferred.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles
  • Based on the department’s needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O’odham language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

Work requires assisting patients to transfer and/or ambulate and sitting, standing and/or walking for extended periods; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to walk. The incumbent occasionally must climb or balance, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in a dental office. Incumbents may be exposed to unpleasant odors, radiation, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous material, and infectious disease. Situations occur where surgical masks, safety goggles, gloves, and protective face shields are needed. The position requires working evenings, weekends, or holidays; including extended hours and irregular shifts will be required. Travel may be required.
