Position Summary:

Provide direct patient care service on the Inpatient Unit and Emergency Room, performing a variety of nursing tasks to deliver safe and effective care.

Scope of Work:

This position is located within the Tohono O’odham Nation Health Care Sells Hospital. It serves in an Inpatient Unit and Emergency Room setting and maybe organizationally located and duty stationed at the Sells Hospital located within the Sells service area. The incumbent works under the Supervisory Nurse Specialist's supervision and may also receive direction from the Charge Nurse, who assigns and checks work for accuracy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Assist in receiving patients into triage and receiving patients for admission on the Inpatient Unit by taking and reading vital signs, height, weight, labeling specimens.
  • Document the results/findings in the EHR (Electronic Health Record).
  • Assists health providers in examining patients by explaining procedures, positioning, draping, and assembling instruments and supplies.
  • Under the direction of a Registered Nurse and a Licensed Practical Nurse, it provides basic nursing care to patients with various conditions, illnesses, and/or injuries.
  • Assists the RN, LPN, and MD by promptly reporting subtle changes in the patient’s condition; initiates CPR and emergency measures appropriate to skill level in emergencies.
  • Assist with collection and proper care of specimens; instructs patients in the proper collection of urine samples.
  • Prepares samples for analysis; routes requisition forms to laboratory and x-ray as needed; documents results of POC (i.e., fingerstick blood glucose) results in the patient’s Electronic Health Record.
  • Assist with escorting/transporting patients to various hospital departments (i.e., laboratory, radiology).
  • Responsible for basic care services such as bathing, grooming, feeding patients, assisting nurses with medical equipment, and checking patient vital signs.
  • Answers patient call lights.
  • Assist in providing nursing care to patients placed in contact, airborne, droplet isolation, and reverse isolation.
  • Sets up patient rooms/exam rooms for admission and clears patient rooms/exam rooms at discharge/release.
  • Sets up and clears the OB, Labor & Delivery room with necessary instruments and supplies after deliveries and is responsible for transporting instruments to Central Sterilization per protocol.
  • Restocks and maintains the isolation wall storage units every shift with adequate supplies.
  • Attends to the patient’s needs, including assistance with grooming, oral hygiene, toileting, transferring, ambulation, or other needs in keeping with the patients’ care requirements and ADL’s (activities-of-daily-living).
  • Serves meals, monitor patients’ diet and helps them with eating.
  • Provides education on diet, nutrition, blood sugar control, fluid intake, safety, and medication intake.
  • Provides and assists with wound care and dressing changes when requested by the RN and the LPN.
  • Assists with New Employee Orientation when requested by the Supervisory Nurse Specialist.
  • Work closely with patient care entities such as hospitals, podiatry, optometry, diabetes, counselors, physical therapy, referral centers, health transportation, and senior services.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the economic, educational, health and social problems of Native Americans.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of basic medical care.
  • Knowledge of basic medical equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge and skill are sufficient to understand the human body structure, function, illnesses, and disease.
  • Knowledge and skill to distinguish between normal and abnormal physical and emotional reactions to nursing care, procedures and medications.
  • Knowledge and ability to react in emergencies, initiate CPR, relay vital information, and assist the Unit team.
  • Knowledge of basic patient and family teaching to assist the Registered Nurse in providing information and instructions to patients on diagnostic procedures.
  • Computer skills are essential for the use of Electronic Health records.
  • Knowledge of the Privacy Act, HIPPA, and its implications of entrusted confidentiality of patient records.
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety and infection control standards, performance improvement, and accreditation standards.
  • Ability to communicate using tact and diplomacy with patients, families, nurses, health care providers, and outside sources to accomplish patient care services.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to be compassionate and have good communication skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged, confidential information.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.
 
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
  • Complete an approved nurse assistant program.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a Certified Nursing Assistant Certification in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a United States territory.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, the incumbent(s) may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing this job's duties, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear and often required to support patients with standing, sitting, and walking. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feet; reach with hands and arms. As a result, the employee may be exposed to infectious diseases, i.e., MRSA, Tuberculosis. Work requires long periods of standing, walking, bending, stretching, and lifting. Lifting and/or moving involves up to 50lbs with assistance, or assistive devices may lift/carry up to 100lbs. The incumbent may be required to work flexible or overtime hours to maintain patient care. Some degree of risk is present in working with emotionally disturbed or intoxicated individuals.
