Position Summary:

Delivers behavioral health services, a component of integrated care within primary medical care setting, for American Indian/Alaska Natives at the Tohono O’odham Nation Sells Hospital.

Scope of Work:

This position is located within the Tohono O’odham Nation Sells Hospital in the Division of Clinical Services. The incumbent serves as a behavioral medicine specialist in the outpatient Primary Care setting for the Sells Service Unit and provides direct behavioral medicine services. The incumbent works under administrative supervision of Social Work Services and is affiliated with the medical staff under the Medical Staff Clinical Director, and exercises full professional responsibility for behavioral health per credentialing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):

  • Responsible for providing behavioral medicine specialty care to the full range of outpatient medical patients/beneficiaries served in the Hospital’s medical home.
  • Provide highly skilled, focused, short-term, brief behavioral medicine services to patients with difficult and complex personal adjustment problems surrounding medical diagnoses and side effects of medications.
  • Applies behavioral and cognitive principles, theories, methods, and techniques to solve problems.
  • Administers and interprets brief evaluations to facilitate medical care.
  • Serves as a behavioral health consultant for the medical home patient-care team members to create a psychotherapeutic environment and advise the staff members on the problems arising during the patient’s treatment.
  • Provide consultative and advisory services to medical health home medical officers, nursing staff, certified medical assistants, dietitians, and other team specialists regarding mental health matters.
  • Defines and applies psychological principles, theories, and methods to individual situations and problems.
  • Use methods and techniques for the measurement and prediction of human behavior.
  • Direct and refers services available to patients with acute, chronic, or severe mental illness, chronic or severe substance abuse, or dependency diagnoses.
  • Recommends appropriate care strategies in coordination with the medical home team.
  • Participates in the planning and implementing brief interventions within the medical home and develops appropriate referrals for community coordination.
  • Analyzes conditions and situations to identify problems, trends, possible causes and recommends corrective action necessary.
  • Develops data and makes proposals or changes on program elements such as resource requirements, priorities, and therapeutic services.
  • Works in a collegial fashion with other disciplines such as social work, psychiatry, and family practice to provide a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Works with other agencies (county, state, federal, etc.) to provide appropriate mental health resources for patients.
  • It provides appropriate patient care data and workload data required by TONHC standards, service unit requirements, Joint Commission requirements, or other accrediting bodies.
  • Contribute to a team effort.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of legal regulations and confidentiality requirements, specifically the Privacy Act of 1974.
  • Knowledge of medical compliance strategies, short evaluation methods, crisis management, relaxation techniques, distraction techniques, hypnotherapy, medical skills development and exercises, social skills development, active coping strategies, specialty referrals, etc.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health programs, psychological evaluation and diagnosis, individual and group psychotherapy, psychological services to adults and their families, and crisis intervention.
  • Knowledge of the department's organizational structure to ensure proper coordination of services through various agency levels and locations.
  • Knowledge and experience with the integrated primary care team and as a team member.
  • Professional knowledge of the unique psychological and medical problems faced by American Indians/Alaska Natives
Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, current, unrestricted license to practice behavioral health.
  • Prescriptive privileging if trained.
  • Specialized clinical psychological treatment modalities gained through completing a professional degree in Social Work, or Psychology or Professional Counseling from a university accredited by the appropriate accreditation association and through a supervised clinical residency of 2 years duration has led to an independent level of licensure.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Alcohol and substance abuse counseling certification and Master's level behavioral health training from an accredited university or higher learning institute are preferred.
  • Specialized Post Master’s Degree Training/Experience is preferred.
  • While employed, must possess a valid, current, unrestricted license to practice as an LCSW, LMFT, LPC, or psychologist.
  • Must obtain a HIPAA Certification within six months of hire.
  • Must obtain an Arizona Notary Public Commission certificate within six months of hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, the incumbent(s) may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. The work involves recognized risks of exposure to emotionally disturbed, chemically dependent, and medically challenged individuals and families.
