Title: Biologics Engineering Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

Duration: 12 weeks

Our Research and Development Scientists are transforming the industry. Interns will be assigned a challenging research project requiring creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.


Objectives/Goals:

Develop procedures for freeze-drying nanoaprticle solutions for bulk preparation and long-term storage. By the end of this summer, the intern will have identified optimal cryoprotectant conditions and thoroughly characterized the resulting nanoparticles

Duties:

The student will gain hands-on laboratory experience optimizing and refining freeze-dried nanoparticle formualtions. 

  • Preparing freeze-dried nanoparticle formulations with various cryoprotectants
  • Characterizing nanoparticle size, dispersity, and nucleic acid encapsulation efficiency
  • Evaluating nucleic acid delivery in target cell types and describe relationships between formulation, nanoparticle properties, and transfection efficacy in vitro.
  • Presenting data in a written report, oral lab meeting presentation, and summer intern poster session

Position Requirements
  • 1 to 3 years of undergraduate work toward a B.S. Engineering (Chemical, Biomedical, Biological), Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, or related
  • Excitement and initiative to gain industry experience and learn new skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment to meet project milestones in a timely fashion
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) to summarize development work, critical conclusions, and relevance to the bigger picture
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment and learn to use equipment with an emphasis on lab safety
  • Effective user of Microsoft Office application suite
  • Prior experience in biomedical or chemistry research, pipetting, and/or mamallian cell culture is a plus
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship, be able to work onsite in Gaithersburg, MD for the summer, at least 18 years of age, and enrolled in a full-time academic program pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
