SUMMARY:

Under basic supervision, performs building inspections for the Jackson Hole Fire-EMS Department (JHF/EMS) to verify compliance with technical requirements; reviews plans and technical drawings, inspects work sites, tests sprinkler and alarm systems, and verifies compliance to codes, regulations, ordinances, and International Fire Codes.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The job description is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Helps to protect the lives and property of County residents through fire inspections, public education programs, and construction plan reviews; tests fire and alarm systems, and conducts inspections of residential buildings to determine compliance with building safety standards, state statutes, county and regional ordinances.
  • Presents public education programs to promote safety and fire prevention.
  • Prepares written reports and issues technical enforcement documents.
  • Supports the relationship between the Teton County staff and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
 
Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND two years’ experience in firefighting/construction/inspection programs; OR equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must possess a valid Wyoming/Idaho Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Fire Inspector certification from the Wyoming Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety is required within six months of hire; incumbent may be required to obtain additional technical certifications.

 

Required Knowledge of:

  • County policies and procedures, and state and federal laws and regulations governing building and safety codes.
  • Methods and techniques of inspecting a variety of plans, buildings, and technical documents.

 

Required Skills in:

  • Inspecting commercial, residential and industrial facilities for fire and safety code hazards and construction standards.
  • Operating and maintaining computer and communications equipment.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment, with regular trips to building sites.
