Title: Biology Summer Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

Duration: 12 weeks

Our Research and Development Scientists are transforming the industry. Interns will be assigned a challenging research project requiring creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork.


Objectives/Goals:

The objective of this internship will be to investigate magnetic, self-assembling nanoparticles as a vehicle for homogeneous display of target antigens (purified, soluble and complex membrane proteins) for antibody discovery. This approach may provide advantages over current approaches for presentation of target antigens, including virus-like particles (heterogenous display) or nanodiscs (speed and labor-intensive).

The intern can expect to gain experience with protein engineering, protein purification, tissue culture, and nanoparticle characterization methods.

Position Requirements

Duties:

An intelligent and driven summer intern is expected to contribute to the expression and purification of ferritin-based nanoparticles and characterize antigen conjugation, including peptides that represent the extracellular loops of target antigens and purified membrane protein antigens.

Requirements:

  • 1 to 2 years of undergraduate work toward a B.S. in biology or related field
  • Excitement and initiative to gain industry experience and learn new skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment to meet project milestones in a timely fashion
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) to summarize development work, critical conclusions, and relevance to the bigger picture
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment and learn to use characterization equipment with an emphasis on lab safety
  • Effective user of Microsoft Office application suite
  • Prior experience with protein engineering, protein purification, tissue culture, and nanoparticle characterization method would be a plus.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship, be able to work onsite in Gaithersburg, MD for the summer, at least 18 years of age, and enrolled in a full-time academic program pursuing a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
