Title: Device Development Engineer Intern

Location: Gaithersburg, MD

Duration: 12 weeks

We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Engineering for a paid summer internship. 


To introduce an intern with career interest in device development engineering to the principles, technical skills, and interpersonal skills that are necessary to succeed in that role. The intern will achieve this objective by owning responsibility and driving the progress of a specific intern project over the summer session. The intern will receive training and continued support from both a mentor and line manager while applying their academic knowledge to an industry project, but will have the autonomy to learn on-the-job as the project is completed.

Core Responsibilities:

The intern will be responsible for a summer project that will evaluate new injection medical device technology, specifically plunger stoppers. The project will generally consist of the following activities:

  • Performing a landscape assessment of technology candidates that are currently available on-market and then communicating with suppliers to gather technical information
  • Applying engineering principles and business considerations to down-select this list of available candidates to a handful of “lead candidates” which will be evaluated further
  • Characterization of the lead candidates via engineering analysis and lab testing
  • Preparing a report of the findings and then presenting the results to the device development department
  • Additionally, the intern may participate in side-projects that align with their interests as business/project needs arise
  • Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship
Position Requirements
  • Rising junior or rising senior working toward a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related field

  • Excitement and initiative to gain industry experience and learn new skills

  • Strong understanding of academic engineering principles

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment to meet project milestones in a timely fashion

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) to summarize development work, critical conclusions, and relevance to the bigger picture

  • Computer Automated Design (CAD) experience, such as Solidworks

  • Understanding of technical evaluation and product development processes

  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment and learn to use characterization equipment with an emphasis on lab safety

  • Effective user of Microsoft Office application suite

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
