Specialist, Core Collection and Graphic Arts 

Description

The Specialist, Core Collection and Graphic Arts is responsible for arranging and processing two distinct collections from different departments at the Margaret Herrick Library. Graphic Arts collections encompass production art and posters including many international examples.  The Core Collection Reference Files includes clipping files and advertising ephemera. The departments each hold a collection documenting Mexican cinema produced between the 1930s and the 1980s.

This is a part-time limited term position for 12 to 18 months in the Graphic Arts Department reporting to the Senior Librarian, Poster Collection. Lobby cards are part of the library’s Core Collection Reference Files and the Supervisor, Production Files will oversee that part of this project. 

Responsibilities:

  • Process posters and lobby cards.
  • Create and edit original catalog records from both departments using the library’s content management system.
  • Research film titles and cast & crew.
  • Support the ingest of existing data as new records.
  • Identify the preservation needs of items, rehouse as needed and create conservation treatment requests.
  • Create digitization projects.
 
Position Requirements
  • Master’s degree in library and information science or archival studies from an accredited program or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in film studies, history, communications, Latin American studies, or art history.
  • 2+ years library or archives experience, preferably in a special collections environment.
  • Understanding of preservation principles and familiarity identifying and handling fragile documents.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Strong computer and research skills.
  • Ability to work with independently and successfully with colleagues.
  • Must be self-motivated, dependable, and efficient with attention to detail and orderly work habits.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds, retrieve and refile heavy boxes from shelving units using ladders and/or stepstools, and sit at a computer and enter data for long periods of time.
