The Center for Policing Equity uses evidence-based approaches to social justice problems and conducts research to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change.

Position Description:

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for a Director of Community Engagement to build and support our team of community engagement coordinators, support our suite of products and services including rollouts to the community after Law Enforcement Agencies' (LEAs) National Justice Database Analysis and policy recommendations, and to assist in building a long-term vision for community engagement practices throughout the organization.

The candidate will serve as part of a growing team that is committed to racial equity - and specifically in uplifting Black and Brown communities - and to cultivating fruitful and long-term relationships with communities around the country in support of public safety.

Candidates should have 8+ years of demonstrated experience working in the advocacy, organizing, policy or government affairs space, with specific experience hiring, growing and supporting a team. The Director will oversee the day-to-day functions of the Community Engagement team, and develop and support plans for success of the Community Engagement Coordinators and Senior Coordinators, working closely with the Program Manager for implementation of program strategy in site-specific projects nationally. The Director will also work to expand existing partnerships, secure new opportunities for partnerships, and serve as a primary decisionmaker relating to new engagement opportunities for community-specific projects. The Director will ensure that communities and other key stakeholders are empowered to advocate for and implement the changes they wish to see in their communities and have optimal impact with CPE and the CE team.

This position requires the ability to collaborate across lanes, especially with the policy team and other product teams, while being externally accountable to key community stakeholders on a multitude of policing initiatives. Under supervision of the Vice President for Policy & Community Engagement, the Director will oversee outreach in CPE partnership cities and work closely with other verticals, and assist with bespoke community initiatives that support relationships between community, government and law enforcement in an effort to reduce racial disparity within law enforcement practices, culture and training.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of the community engagement team, including a growing team of 5+ coordinators each with discrete project oversight and interdisciplinary skills

  • Expand and develop team capacity, identifying staffing needs, and recommending new roles as needed

  • Work with the Vice President to develop a budget and needs assessments as needed

  • Develop protocols for research, outreach, project staffing in collaboration with the Program Management Office (PMO)

  • Provide high-level guidance in identifying organizations and community members who represent demographics impacted by and on the forefront of public safety

  • Collaborating across the organization to engage the appropriate groups/products/services as necessary to accomplish the objective-aligned CE Plan, with the support of the PMO

  • Respectfully, honestly, and diplomatically communicating community perspectives, concerns and objectives internally within CPE and externally to partners, as needed

  • Ensuring community transparency into the data gathering and results/recommendations/next steps of the engagement

  • Leveraging internal CPE tools to document and provide internal transparency to Community Engagement Work via Cityscape, Asana, Salesforce and externally via qualitative data collection tools


  • 8+ years of experience in government, campaigns, organizing, policy or relevant social justice spaces with a strong commitment to economic, gender, social and racial justice issues

  • 5+ years of people management experience, team building experience is preferred

  • Effective cross functional leader and consensus builder

  • Excellent aptitude for developing and presenting big visions, meticulous plans, and actionable learning

  • Up-to-date on cultural and community trends

  • Facility and familiarity with specific communities and interest groups

  • Issue driven and results oriented

  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred

  • Ability to travel and work flexible hours (all duties can be done virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic)

  • Advanced communication skills - including an ability to present to and communicate with internal CPE stakeholders and senior leadership, as well as across diverse communities, government and law enforcement agencies

  • High level of emotional intelligence and attention to detail

  • Passionate commitment to economic, environmental, gender, social and racial justice issues
