The Center for Policing Equity uses evidence-based approaches to social justice problems and conducts research to create levers for social, cultural, and policy change.

Position Description:

The Center for Policing Equity (CPE) is looking for a skilled Assistant Director, Talent and Culture (HR) with an unwavering passion for social justice issues. This position will report to the Sr. Director of Talent and Culture and work collaboratively with the Finance and Operations Leadership Team. The Assistant Director, Talent and Culture will help expand our Human Resources (HR) Operations and systems from the ground up to support our growing team and organization for scale. You'll partner with both leaders and individual contributors to help educate, advise and influence our ability to hire, motivate, and retain amazing teammates. This position requires a high degree of integrity, collaboration, and drive to execution. Under the direction of the Sr. Director of Talent & Culture, the Assistant Director, Talent and Culture will serve as a true HR strategic business partner in the execution of departmental plans driving initiatives that attract and retain talent, develop employees and leaders and align organizational goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As a key member of the HR leadership team, the Assistant Director, Talent and Culture will assist in driving Human Resource initiatives to provide an employee oriented, high performance culture that emphasizes empowerment, equity, quality, productivity and standards, goal attainment and organizational growth.

  • In partnership with the Sr. Director of Talent and Culture, assists in the development of human resource strategies by identifying and researching human resource issues; contributes information, analysis and recommendations to support CPE's Talent and Culture strategic direction and will assist in the execution of key Talent and Culture strategic priorities.

  • Assists in the development and execution of HR strategic initiatives and programs that align and support enterprise-wide objectives. This includes: talent acquisition, organization strategy, manager training, people development, total rewards, benefits, career architecture, compliance, people-related policies, system and process roll out, and change management.

  • Works closely with leaders and management to advise, counsel, and provide coaching and resolution to address employees' performance. Provides performance management guidance to line management (coaching, counseling, career development, disciplinary actions).

  • Oversees employee relations, investigations, counseling, and exit interview processes.

  • Reports daily, weekly and monthly KPI reporting as determined by the Vice President/SD of Talent and Culture.

  • Responsible for continuous improvement and innovation as it is related to improving processes, addressing performance, creating action plans and ensuring proper training and development of employees.

  • Serves as the first point of escalation after the VP/SD Talent and Culture, communicates business developments and organizational changes to team members, and addresses and resolves employee concerns.

  • Participate in the establishment and implementation of Diversity Equity and Inclusion organization-wide strategies

  • Mentor junior HR Staff members including Recruiting ,Generalist functions


  • Demonstrated track record of developing effective relationships across all levels of organizations and with diverse client groups.

  • History of working closely with executives, managers and employees to handle a variety of issues and tasks, including organization design and change, transfers, promotions, performance issues and terminations. Demonstrated ability to support major initiatives across challenging business groups.

  • Excellent presentation, verbal and written communication skills; must be an articulate and persuasive communicator. Ability to conduct group facilitation, coach and counsel managers at all levels.

  • Knowledge of staffing, employee relations, compensation, and talent management best practices.

  • Good working knowledge of applicable employment laws.

  • Proven HR experience preferably within a high-growth non-profit organization.

  • Desire to make others successful.

  • Passion for data integrity, process definition, and continuous learning.

  • Results-driven, solutions-oriented, and comfortable in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities.

  • Maintains the highest levels of confidentiality with personnel data and reports.

  • Working knowledge of DEI principles.


  • 7-10 years experience as an HR Business Partner, or HR Manager for a high growth, dynamic organization.

  • Bachelor's degree in business, human resources or a related field; Master's degree preferred

  • Has a passion for social and racial justice
