SUMMARY

Opus One Winery is looking for Harvest interns to join us for the 2022 harvest season. The Yeast Intern will be responsible for inoculating all tanks throughout harvest. This is an extremely hands-on position due to our fermentation processes. Our fermentations are largely inoculated with non-commercial Native yeast strains that require a lengthy and careful propagation procedure. This position will spend roughly 75% of their time in the Cellar and 25% of their time in the Lab. We strive to provide a safe, educational and enjoyable work environment while learning our winemaking processes in reaching absolute wine quality.

This is a temporary position anticipated to commence in mid-August and is projected to last for approximately 4 months, subject to harvest conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Works closely with the Research Manager for communications regarding yeast health & inoculation scheduling.
  • Yeast keg preparation including sanitation, nutrient additions, and pH adjustment.
  • Collection, clarification, and sanitary handling of must for inoculum preparation.
  • Inoculation of all fermentation tanks.
  • Data tracking and record keeping for all inoculations.
  • Communication with both Cellar and Lab team for timely and efficient activity completion.
  • Assist with microscope cell counting and yeast scale-up process as needed and time permitting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience

Must possess a Highschool diploma. Desire to work in the cellar or lab and learn winemaking processes with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and prioritize attention to detail. Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel preferred. Individual must have an interest in winemaking and possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Opus One Winery.

Skills

Must be able to perform quality work, safely and consistently with minimum supervision or direction. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Use proper safety equipment and safety procedures. Able to handle multiple competing tasks and priorities. Have strong verbal communications skills. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional variables. Ability to comprehend the consequences of various problem situations and to refer them to the appropriate people for resolution.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and/or fingers to handle or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee is occasionally required to sit, walk, climb (including stairs to work platforms 12 feet or more in height), stoop, crawl inside tanks, kneel, talk or hear, taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 55 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Working Conditions

Work is mainly performed in a Winery/Cellar/Lab. The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles relative to normal cellar processes. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud.

Hazards: Occasionally works near moving machinery parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • Assist management to provide safe and healthy working conditions at all times.
  • Immediately report all unsafe conditions, work-related accidents, and illnesses to Safety Manager and supervisor.
