SUMMARY

Opus One Winery is looking for harvest interns to join us for the 2022 harvest season. The Berry Sampler Intern will be responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing berry samples for maturity controls. The position monitors vineyard-related data to present to the Research Manager and the VP of Winemaking for harvest decisions. Time is split between mornings in the vineyards and afternoons in the Lab. We strive to provide a safe, educational and enjoyable work environment while learning the day-to-day operations within the lab and vineyard to reach absolute wine quality.

This is a temporary position anticipated to commence in mid-July and is projected to last for approximately 5 months, subject to harvest conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Perform stem and leaf water potentials.
  • Count and collect cluster and berry samples for crop estimates.
  • Collect berry samples from various vineyard blocks.
  • Process berry samples in the laboratory.
  • Data entry using AgCode.
  • Perform basic analysis: berry weights, °Brix, use of OenoFoss.
  • Map vineyard blocks.
  • Miscellaneous cellar work as needed & time permitting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and/or Experience

Must possess a Highschool diploma. Desire to work in the lab and vineyards with a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and prioritize attention to detail. Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel preferred. Individual must have an interest in agriculture and possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Opus One Winery.

Skills

Must be able to perform quality work, safely and consistently with minimum supervision or direction. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Use proper safety equipment and safety procedures. Able to handle multiple competing tasks and priorities. Have strong verbal and written communications skills. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional variables. Ability to comprehend the consequences of various problem situations and to refer them to the appropriate people for resolution.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and/or fingers to handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to sit, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, talk or hear, taste or smell. Must be able to travel by car or truck, visit multiple vineyard locations, walk hillside and flat vineyards, work in various weather conditions throughout the season, stand for four-hour intervals. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Working Conditions

Work is mainly performed in a Vineyard/Laboratory/Cellar. The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles relative to normal Cellar and Lab processes. Noise levels are usually moderate to loud.

Hazards: Occasionally works near moving machinery parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and toxic or caustic chemicals. Frequently exposed to various weather conditions.

  • Follow all company policies and procedures including job safety, safety rules and regulations.
  • Assist management to provide safe and healthy working conditions at all times.
  • Immediately report all unsafe conditions, work-related accidents, and illnesses to Safety Manager and supervisor.
