For more information please visit www.astrazeneca.com .   Description Location: Gaithersburg, MD We are currently seeking juniors or seniors who are working towards obtaining a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry or a related field for lab-based internship assignment during the summer of 2022. PS80 is very commonly used in the biopharmaceutical industry as a stabilizing excipient. It has wide UV absorbance and fluorescence emission ranges that overlap with those of protein molecules, which means that it in situations that require high amounts of PS80 relative to the protein, PS80 signal interference can obscure the purity of the protein drug during analysis via Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). There are two cases where this poses a particularly significant risk: Clinical compatibility testing of highly potent molecules, which are dosed at extremely low concentrations and with relatively high amounts of PS80. Patient-centric Drug Product (DP) formulation design, where PS80 concentrations are limited by analytical capabilities.   Core Responsibilities: The goal of this project is to develop an SEC method that would support both low dose clinical compatibility testing and DP formulation development by either fully separating or completely removing PS80 signal interference from the protein chromatogram.   Primary Duties: Evaluate a wide number of separation techniques in conjunction with the standard SEC column, using a 2D HPLC system. Optimize and validate the selected method for a wide array of protein modalities and concentrations. Write a technical report to facilitate transfer of the method to other departments. Present data at department meeting and at company-wide poster event   Position Requirements Position Requirements: Basic wet chemistry skills including safe handling of chemicals, pipetting, and preparation of buffers and other chemical solutions Experience with High Performance Liquid Chromatography and knowledge of different separation techniques (size exclusion, hydrophobic interaction, ion exchange, etc.) is strongly preferred Good understanding of protein structure and structure-function relationships is highly desired Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0+   Full-Time/Part-Time -unspecified-   Location Gaithersburg, MD   This position is currently not accepting applications.
