The Staff Accountant will prepare and maintain financial records and reports, perform account reconciliations, assist with budget and close processes, conduct internal audits and maintain accounts payable documentation. They will also be responsible for tracking the organization's assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Maintains the general ledger by accrued basis with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Performs general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization.
  • Lead the month-end closing process, generate monthly Balance Sheets and Statements of Activities for reports.
  • Codes invoices, set up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
  • Reconciles bank accounts on a monthly basis verify deposits and addresses inquiries from banks.
  • Reconciles cash and all assets accounts, payroll allocations, customer accounts, and other financial accounts; manages accounts receivable collections.
  • Verifies and/or completes payment of invoices associated with accounts payable, ensures payments are charged to the appropriate chart of accounts, and in accordance with contracts.
  • Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.
  • Files tax forms with federal, state, and local government agencies.
  • Coordinates with software vendors to maintain accounting software systems; recommends updates to enhance the accounting software.
  • Manages the purchasing and invoicing system.
  • Prepares, verifies, and posts financial transactions, such as funds received and disbursed, and totals accounts to ledgers and databases.
  • Reconciles various expenditure reports to source documents; reconciles entries and internal ledgers to financial reporting system reports; distributes and files financial documents and reports.
  • Sorts documents; codes, logs, reviews for accuracy; matches supporting invoices to procurement contracts; and verifies invoices for payment.
  • Researches processing problems, contacts departments, and vendors to resolve problems and expedite payment, and responds to inquiries by telephone or in writing; refers complex problems to the appropriate person for a solution.
  • Handles cash and cash-related transactions, issues receipts, records, and types money lists, and balances cash funds; enters cash transactions in ledgers and reconciles cash registers; prepares bank deposits.
  • Assists in the preparation of financial statements such as billings, budgets, and cost reports.
  • May lead, guide, and train staff/student employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work; may participate in the recruitment of volunteers, as appropriate to the area of operation.
  • Maintains knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Passionate about CPE's mission.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or related field, preferred.
  • At least three years of related experience are required.
  • Proficient with Quickbooks Online
  • MS Excel wizard!
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to perform accounting procedures.
  • Knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.
  • Understanding of and the ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to correctly prepare tax reports.
  • Knowledge of accounting and payroll policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to read, sort, check, count, and verify numbers.
  • Account balancing skills.
  • Ability to use an automated accounting system.
  • Ability to prepare financial reports.
