JOB DESCRIPTION

TEACHER ASSISTANT

OVERVIEW: The Teacher Aide assists the Lead Teacher in creating and managing an attractive, warm and challenging learning environment for young children, incorporating developmentally appropriate learning activities which meet the needs of the group as well as those individual children and be able to conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Lead Teacher/Education Manager

POSITION STATUS: Regular Full-Time

SALARY LEVEL: $16.00 per hour

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday; 8-4:30 p.m. 39 weeks per year

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  • Assists in implementing the program curriculum and the Head Start Performance Standards for classrooms. Provides input into the preparation of developmentally appropriate daily lesson plans in advance, which include: multicultural educational materials and activities; both classroom and playground activities; family style dining at meals and snacks, per HSPS and program policy and procedure; and individualized activities that are recorded in the lesson plans.
  • Assists in organizing the classroom in well-developed and defined learning centers, rotating materials routinely to create a stimulating learning environment for young children.
  • Assists with preparing the room prior to the children's arrival and with cleaning and preparing the classroom for the next day.
  • Facilitates children's learning, using appropriate positive child guidance techniques. Stays involved with the children at all times in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Assists in observing children and recording observations, making appropriate referrals to the Lead Teacher and /or the Education Manager. Assists in maintaining accurate documentation according to program policies and procedures.
  • Assists with developmental screening, as assigned, ensuring proper administration of the screening and accurate results.
  • Encourage parent-involvement and participation. Greets and talks with parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a positive home-center connection and a family partnership. Work with the Lead Teacher to maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents through a variety of methods (phone calls, notes, informal conferences) and assists in preparing activities to send home for parents to do with their children. Encourages families to become participate in workshops, trainings and other Head Start activities and events.
  • Assists Teacher with at least two (2) home visits and two (2) parent conferences with each child's family per year, according to the program schedule. Ability to assist teacher in supervising, guidance and facilitation learning 3, 4 and 5 year old children
  • Participates in center staff meetings, case management meetings, and Head Start Parent Education Meetings (i.e Family Gatherings) on a regular basis.
  • Continues professional development by participating in training and workshops/conferences as available.
  • Share the responsibility of maintaining a safe, healthy and attractive environment throughout the program.
  • Work closely with teacher staff and component managers in sharing concerns and implementing plans to meet identified needs of the children and families.
  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintain a good attendance record; to provide stability and continuity of care, performs duties in a timely and professional manner; participates in all program activities when requested.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation in a calm and appropriate manner.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education or development is extremely helpful, as well as good verbal and writing communication skills.
 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Have a current child development associate credential (CDA) or be willing to enroll in a CDA credential program that will be completed within one year after date of hire
  • Have an associate or baccalaureate degree(in any area) or be currently enrolled in a program leading to such a degree
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s license, must be insurable
  • First Aid/Infant and Child CPR required and a Food Handlers permit
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases (Negative TB test) by employment date
  • No prior convictions of child-related offenses or any felonies.
  • Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies.
  • Pre-Employment drug testing to be administer prior to employment
  • Must be Fully Vaccinated from COVID 19 and provide vaccination records upon hire

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift and carry a child 20+ pounds
  • Other Functional requirements:
  1. Moderate lifting, 15-40 pounds, moderate carrying over 10 pounds and light carrying under 10 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • . Daily kneeling, stooping, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to children’s needs
