BUS DRIVER/TEACHING ASSISTANT

OVERVIEW: Under the supervision of FCP/transportation manager and the Education/Disabilities Manager, the bus driver/teaching assistant will drive a school bus with over specified routes to transport 3, 4 and 5 year old children. As well as the classroom duties of assisting the lead teacher. This job includes constant noise, travel, working closely with others, irregular work hours, loading and unloading buses with children and supplies and all classroom duties.

WORK LOCATION: Lower Elwha Head Start

SUPERVISED BY: Transportation Coordinator 45% and Education Manager 55%

POSITION STATUS: Regular full-time, works 40 hours per week during school year

SALARY LEVEL: $18.00

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 hours/week

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

Classroom

  • Assists in implementing the program curriculum and the Head Start Performance Standards for classrooms. Provides input into the preparation of developmentally appropriate daily lesson plans in advance, which include: multicultural educational materials and activities; both classroom and playground activities; family style dining at meals and snacks, per HSPS and program policy and procedure; and individualized activities that are recorded in the lesson plans.
  • Assists in organizing the classroom in well-developed and defined learning centers, rotating materials routinely to create a stimulating learning environment for young children.
  • Assists with preparing the room prior to the children's arrival and with cleaning and preparing the classroom for the next day.
  • Facilitates children's learning, using appropriate positive child guidance techniques. Stays involved with the children at all times in the classroom and on the playground.
  • Assists in observing children and recording observations, making appropriate referrals to the Lead Teacher and /or the Education Manager. Assists in maintaining accurate documentation according to program policies and procedures.
  • Assists with developmental screening, as assigned, ensuring proper administration of the screening and accurate results.
  • Encourage parent-involvement and participation. Greets and talks with parents and children pleasantly and appropriately, ensuring a positive home-center connection and a family partnership. Work with the Lead Teacher to maintain ongoing professional and appropriate communication with parents through a variety of methods (phone calls, notes, informal conferences) and assists in preparing activities to send home for parents to do with their children. Encourages families to become participate in workshops, trainings and other Head Start activities and events.
  • Assists Teacher with at least two (2) home visits and two (2) parent conferences with each child's family per year, according to the program schedule. Ability to assist teacher in supervising, guidance and facilitation learning 3, 4 and 5 year old children
  • Participates in center staff meetings, case management meetings, and Head Start Parent Education Meetings (i.e Family Gatherings) on a regular basis.
  • Continues professional development by participating in training and workshops/conferences as available.
  • Share the responsibility of maintaining a safe, healthy and attractive environment throughout the program.
  • Work closely with teacher staff and component managers in sharing concerns and implementing plans to meet identified needs of the children and families.
  • Reports to work at scheduled times and maintain a good attendance record; to provide stability and continuity of care, performs duties in a timely and professional manner; participates in all program activities when requested.
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation in a calm and appropriate manner.
  • Knowledge of early childhood education or development is extremely helpful, as well as good verbal and writing communication skills.

Transportation

  • Conduct pre-drive safety checklist before morning and afternoon run. Turn completed form in to Transportation Coordinator weekly.
  • Transport children and volunteers from their homes or designated pick-up points to Head Start and back on school days, field trips or as asked by the Director.
  • Ensure passenger safety at all times (seat belts fastened, children never left unattended)
  • Ensure that all children have exited the bus upon arrival to destination
  • Maintain service, safety and cleanliness of bus to include up-to-date service records.
  • Report deficiencies to Transportation Coordinator and add fuel, oil, coolant, and washer as needed.
  • Maintain up-to-day emergency cards in van or bus with list of children's names, addresses and emergency contacts.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills quarterly.
  • Will record daily mileage.
  • Will provide for safe transportation of children by maintaining a vehicle that is in good running order and free of obstacles that could injure driver or children.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY POSITION:

  • Ability to assist in supervising pre-school children and ensure a safe/healthy environment including the ability to monitor and respond to events going on at all times in the Head Start bus and classroom/playground
  • Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an emergency or a crisis situation.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and understand Policies and Procedures pertaining to job duties

 
Position Requirements

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Have a current child development associate credential (CDA) or be willing to enroll in a CDA credential program that will be completed within one year after hire
  • Have an associate or baccalaureate degree(in any area) or be currently enrolled in a program leading to such a degree
  • Must have three years of driving experience and provide evidence of safe driving record
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Washington State Drivers license
  • Valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with school bus endorsement.
  • First Aid and CPR card must be obtain within 30 days of starting date
  • A physical exam with results in letter form that states person is free of communicable diseases (Negative TB test) by employment date
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID 19 and submit vaccination records upon hire
  • A Washington State Department of Transportation (DOT) physical stating physical clearance to drive.
  • No prior convictions of child-related offenses or any felonies.
  • Background check to be conducted prior to employment date
  • Must be able to comply with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe Head Start Drug Free Workplace policies.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift and carry a child 20+ pounds
  • Other Functional requirements:
  1. Moderate lifting, 15-40 pounds, moderate carrying over 10 pounds and light carrying under 10 pounds, and occasional lifting up to 50 pounds
  • . Daily kneeling, stooping, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to children’s needs

OTHER DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Share the responsibility of maintaining a safe, healthy and attractive learning environment
  • Work closely with education staff in sharing concerns and meeting identified needs.
  • Maintain a safe, insurable driving record (any citation issued to a driver while driving a tribal vehicle may be reason for dismissal).
  • Ability to distinguish basic colors
  • Pre-Employment drug testing to be administer prior to employment
