POSITION SUMMARY
The incumbent of this position provides house/nursing supervision for the Division of Nursing Services and coordinates patient care activities and support activities to assure smooth hospital operation during weekend, evening, and night tours. Incumbent is responsible for assuring that adequate staff are available to meet patient care needs. Uses the patient acuity/staffing program to determine staffing requirements and patient care needs, redistributes personnel, recalls on-call staff, and approves leaves as indicated by the acuity system.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Ensures adequate coverage for staff in all Units requesting sick leave, or emergency annual leave working in collaboration with Nursing Directors or designee to ensure appropriate staffing levels.
- Serves as the onsite Hospital Administrator in the Absence of the Chief Nursing Officer and as Hospital Chief Executive Officer after hours and on weekends. Collaborates with the Hospital Administrator to make decisions to close units to admissions based on acuity and staffing.
- Participates in the operational activities of the healthcare system, so to contribute towards process improvements in the delivery of safe patient care.
- Actively supports TCRHCC’s Recruitment/Retention activities.
- Assist with management of employees, in collaboration with the Nursing Directors or designee. Recommends to Nursing directors staff recognition, disciplinary action, reassignments, promotion, and other personnel actions. Works with Nursing Directors as peers and assists with all aspects of personnel administration, if needed.
- Coordinates admissions, discharges and transfers (intra- and inter- facility), utilizing the patient classification system as a basis to determine patient needs. Assists charge nurse with determining patient care assignments.
- Coordinates call back for support departments, i.e., Laboratory, X-ray, Operating Room, transport drivers, and medical staff. Makes nursing rounds to evaluate patient care needs, staffing, environmental and safety aspects.
- Evaluates staff skill levels and assesses the need for educational activities. Recommends training needs to the nursing directors and the Lead House Supervisor. Assists with program planning, setting goals, standards and evaluation.
- Supports and participates in the Nursing Department’s Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), Infection Control, Discharge Planning, Risk Management, and Safety Programs. Participates in the development of Hospital Emergency Plans, assists with education of staff and coordination of Nursing Department responses.
- Serves as nursing representative on assigned hospital and nursing committees. Assists as directed with all activities related in compliance with the Joint Commission and Federal regulations.
- Provides monthly reports summarizing activities as directed, i.e. EMTALA report
- Provides skilled and comprehensive nursing care to patients, who because of the extensiveness or complexity of their condition require frequent adaptation of the usual nursing process. Provides consultation and guidance to staff nurses as needed in dealing with complicated or critical patients. Assists with patient care as needed.
- Actively participates in providing education to the service population regarding the facility’s mission and service availability to the community. In concert with the element, will on annual basis develop and implement a program to educate the community about the mission and services available.
- Must demonstrate ability to execute assigned projects and initiatives.
- Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role.
- Ensure proper PPE is worn at all times while on duty including but not limited to, face mask, gloves, gown, isolation gown, NIOSH-approved N95 filtering facepiece respirator or higher, if available), and eye or face shield.
- Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. (see CDC website for most current updates)
- Complete task training for all routine cleaning and decontamination processes for all surfaces contaminated by a communicable disease to ensure a high level of patient, visitor, employee and external customer satisfaction

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT

Physical:
Work requires prolonged hours of siting, standing, walking, maintaining balance, reaching, frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and occasional driving and climbing. Work may require some lifting in assisting inpatient care and moving medical equipment and supplies. Must have ability to lift, push and pull up to 24lbs for a prolonged period of time and occasionally over 100lbs as needed. Sensory requirements for position include far, near, color vision, depth perception, seeing fine details, hearing normal speech, hearing overhead pages, and telephone use. Must have both hand manipulation of simple grasping, fine manipulation, use of keyboards, and frequent firm grasping. Work is performed on a rotational basis on all shifts, including weekends, and holidays. Must accept a flexible schedule to meet unit needs.
Mental:
The incumbent exercises appropriate judgment to determine the nature of patient care and other services to be provided utilizing own initiative and instructions by the Lead House Supervisor and the CNO. Must have ability to cope with high levels of stress, make decisions under high pressure, manage altercations, concentrate, handle a high degree of flexibility, handle multiple priorities in stressful situation, work alone, demonstrate high degree of patience, and frequently adapt to shift work.
Environmental:
May frequently be exposed to infectious diseases, loud noises, occasional exposure to chemical agents, dust, fumes, gases, extremes in temperature or humidity, hazardous or moving equipment, and unprotected heights.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Must have a bachelor’s degree in Nursing
Certifications:
- A valid, current, full and unrestricted Professional Nursing License to practice nursing in any state of the United States of America, The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States
- Must have and maintain a current valid certification of the following throughout employment:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association, if none obtain within six (6) months of hire
- Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), required within in six (6) months of hire
Experience:
Must have three (3) years of current and continuous acute care experience with (two) 2 years in a critical care specialty area, i.e. ICU, ED. and demonstrate progressive leadership experience, such as Lead Clinical Nurse or Unit Manager
