OVERVIEW -

ACCESSOperators provide door-to-door or curb-to-curb transit service to eligible elderly passengers and persons with disabilities. They provide a valuable and essential service to our community.

Salary (as ofJuly 10, 2022):$22.52/hour. Make$32.21/hourat the sixth year of employment.Top rate currently $34.79/hour.

No experience required and paid training provided.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 18 years old at time of hire
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid WA State Drivers License
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test and criminal background check.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Operate a bus or van to pick up and transport seniors and persons with disabilities to/from their destination.
  • Escort/assist passengers from door at home or pick-up location to the bus and help them with boarding and disembarking.
  • Monitor fare collection and provide information to passengers about available services.
  • Provide a valuable and essential service to your community.
  • Load and unload passengers using wheelchairs and scooters while operating the vehicle lift and securing the mobility aids in vehicles.
  • Maintain a Commercial Drivers License. Training provided to obtain a Commercial Drivers License.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

You must be in good physical condition including eyesight correctable to 20/40, and have normal speech and hearing ability. You must pass a pre-employment physical capacities test, CDL physical examination and a drug screen prior to hire. Additionally, you must pass a practical fit test to ensure that you have sufficient strength to operate a large vehicle and help passengers in wheelchairs with their personal belongings. You must be able to fit comfortably in the drivers seat, safely and effectively reach and operate pedals and equipment and push/pull manual wheelchairs with passengers in them.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Operators must be able to:

  • Sit and operate a bus for long periods of time with infrequent breaks.
  • Turn side-to-side and reach overhead to adjust mirrors and push/pull up to a force of 50 pounds.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds overhead.
  • Bend, squat, and kneel to secure wheelchairs many times a day, to install tire chains, and to complete pre-trip inspections of vehicles.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds to assist passengers with bags or packages.
  • Partial lift/slide of wheelchair onto the bus (up to 115 lbs. of force)
  • Maneuver passengers in manual wheelchairs to/from the bus on all surface terrains including ramps, walkways and driveways.
  • Must be able to climb up to several flights of stairs to escort passengers and to go up and down two steps when getting on and off the bus 20 - 30 times a day.
  • Maneuver in and out of confined spaces periodically throughout the shift.

BENEFITS:

  • Annual increases per the labor contract: 3% wage increase in 2021, 4.5% increase in 2022 and 4.25% increase in 2023. A 20-cents-per-hour wage adjustment for ACCESS operators effective Feb. 16, 2023.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision for Full-time drivers and at the 7th month of employment for Part-time drivers.
  • $1,000 retention bonus to those employed as of November 30, 2022. Longevity step increases added 15 years, 2% above current rate; 20 years, 4% above; 25 years, 8% above.

  • Transit privileges on fixed route and Kitsap Fast Ferries.
  • Retirement (pension): Kitsap Transit participates in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).
  • Vacation/Sick (PTO) Pay: Full-time drivers earn 22 days of leave a year, pro-rated accrual based on hours worked.
  • Holiday Pay: Full-time drivers receive nine paid scheduled holidays, plus two floating days.
