Individuals in the job are responsible for assisting Tropical Financial Credit Union in achieving its purpose of guiding members successfully through the financial marketplace. The Mortgage Director is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the Mortgage department. The processes include the processing, underwriting, closing, disbursing, and servicing of First Mortgage Loans, overseeing the growth of first mortgage production by developing programs, action plans, and initiatives to promote the first mortgage programs and TFCU to members and the community.

The additional responsibilities ensure that all First Mortgage Loans comply with all Financial Federal and State regulations (RESPA, HMDA, Financial Fair Housing Act, Flood Insurance, Fair Credit Reporting, Truth In Lending Disclosure, Right of Rescission, etc.). The individual in this role requires complete knowledge of real estate transactions, mortgage processing, underwriting to FNMA and FHLMC standards, and secondary market operations. The individual in this role will also assist Credit Union members with mortgage loan products and proactively solicits mortgage business from realtors, key Select Employer Groups (SEGs), Partner Companies (PCs), and members.

This individual directs the work of all Mortgage Loan Operations team and Originators and assists in establishing and monitoring goals, implementing policies and procedures, training, and assisting them with developing business opportunities.

In addition, this position, in conjunction with the EVP/Chief Operations Officer, is responsible for product development, enhancements, promotions, and training of branch personnel in the specialty area.

Position Requirements

  • Knowledgeable about the profitable operation of a Mortgage company.
  • Strong underwriting experience.
  • Hands-on experience with processing, shipping, and disbursing First Mortgage loans.
  • Automated processing system knowledge required.
  • An individual in this position is required to interact regularly with all credit union employees and external vendors; therefore, outstanding interpersonal skills are necessary.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in an organized and timely fashion.
  • Initiative and flexibility.
  • Willingness to promote and stay up-to-date on organizational policies, procedures, and federal and state legislation affecting the first mortgage industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and coordinate the activities of others and to implement control and follow-up procedures.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal, motivational, analytical, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Capable of compiling, analyzing, preparing, and presenting reports with financial/statistical data.
  • Must be proficient in the use of standard business applications in a Windows-based environment (i.e., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Ability to lead a staff of 15 or more employees.
  • Effective planning, analytical, and decision-making abilities
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers with related business software packages.
  • Must be proficient in the use of standard business applications in a Windows-based environment (i.e., MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Education, Experience, and Skills

  • 7-10 years FNMA/FHLMC, FHA, and VA lending experience
  • BA or BS from accredited, four-Year University preferred.
  • 7-10 years proven knowledge and experience in underwriting; processing; closing, secondary market, and selling, brokering, shipping, and disbursing First Mortgage loans.
  • Sound understanding of risk management concepts, including underwriting, loan audit, and fraud avoidance.
  • Must have experience leading and training loan operations (underwriters, processors, and closers), and originators.
  • Must have experience in public speaking before large groups.
  • Must be knowledgeable of regulatory compliance requirements applicable to first mortgage lending.
  • Must know title insurance, settlement, and appraisal requirements.
  • Must be able to adapt to market, regulatory, agency, and investor requirement changes.
  • Strong leadership skills, with a proven track record of success in a leadership position
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal and interpersonal communications skills to effectively work with members and coworkers
  • Must have a proactive approach to workload, ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities. Must possess initiative
