With such a variety of activities available, it should not come as a surprise that Kaukauna is also known as 'The Friendly City.'   Position Youth Baseball/Softball Umpire   Description CITY OF KAUKAUNAPosition Description Girls Softball UmpireRecreation DepartmentReports to the Recreation Director (or His/Her Designee) POSITION SUMMARYThe Youth Baseball/Softball Umpire is responsible for the officiating of girls softball games. MAJOR POSITION DUTIES Wear Recreation Department issued umpire uniform. Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to game time. Punch in on smart-phone app. Examine and evaluate the safety of the playfield, surrounding area and equipment. Set-up of the playfield. Remove base caps/plugs and store. Put in safety base at first base and second & third bases. If it hasn't already been done by Parks staff, chalk batter's boxes using frame and chalker. Chalk 1st & 3rd base lines. Rake out wet spots and do minor field grooming as necessary. Obtain two new baseballs/softballs (of the appropriate size for the league) per game from storage. Keep Storage Secured! Start and end games according to the schedule, rules and weather cancellation policy. Communicate with participants, Coaches and other staff in a professional manner. Interpret and enforce the rules of the game on the field throughout the game. Supervise and control the general conduct of all participants in the game. Invoke and impose penalties for violations of rules and unsportsmanlike conduct. Make decisions on any point not specifically covered in rules. Turn on the field lights at the appropriate time. The safety of participants and the cost of operation are important considerations when determining when to play under the lights. Clean-up the playfield at the completion of the night's games. Remove and store bases; return base caps/plugs. Punch-out on smartphone app. Report incidents and concerns to the Recreation Director in a timely manner. Attend all necessary program meetings Other duties as assigned by the Recreation Director. QUALIFICATIONS(ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES) Must be 16+ years old. Strong leadership and decision-making skills. Strong communication skills Knowledge of Kaukauna Recreation Department Youth Baseball/Girls Softball Rules. Prior experience Umpiring softball/baseball games preferred. High School Diploma or Higher preferred. Prior experience as a baseball/softball athlete (JV or higher) preferred. ENVIONMENTAL CONDITIONS Ability to stoop, kneel, climb, bend, lift, push and pull up to 50 pounds. Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration. Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time. Ability to endure a variety of weather and temperature conditions for prolonged periods of time.
