For more information please visit www.astrazeneca.com .   Description Location: Gaithersburg, MD We are currently seeking candidates who are working towards obtaining a degree in Biology, Animal Science, Pre-Vet, Laboratory Animal for an internship assignment during the summer of 2022. Core Responsibilities: Explore career options in animal research, expand knowledge about research, develop and improve animal skills in handling, restraint, and technical procedures.   Primary Duties: Observe appropriate safety and study requirements by reading, understanding and following Standard Operating Procedures (AST Guidelines), applicable regulations and study protocols. Observe appropriate safety and health practices including personal protective equipment and barrier requirements. Perform daily health/mortality checks. Evaluate health status of animals.  Communicate with AST Supervior or Manager. Perform basic technical procedures such as SC, and IP injections, cardiac blood collection, and oral gavage. Perform basic tissue collection procedures and euthanasia. Observe and examine animals for sign of disease, distress or pain. Record observations and body weights according to AST Guidelines and enter data in Excel spread sheets. Perform standard husbandry procedures as needed. Perform animal identification procedures (ear tagging) Maintain the animal facility in a clean and orderly condition. Perform other duties as assigned by the AST Supervisor or Manager. Practice performing additional technical procedures when time allows.   Position Requirements Position Requirements: The ability to lift objects frequently in performing daily work activities, ability to pull or push objects on a regular basis, ability to carry objects on a regular basis in the arms or on the shoulders, ability to stoop or crouch by bending at the waist or by bending at the legs. The ability to withstand exposure to high-temperature levels that may result in body discomfort, knowledge and use of protective equipment and safety procedures related to the possible exposure to dust, viruses, tissues, chemical, fumes, vapors, and mists that could potentially affect the health of the employee. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and Outlook.
