SUMMER CAMP DIRECTOR

JOB SUMMARY: (What is done and why.)

The Camp Director is responsible for managing Circus Smirkus’s residential summer camp to ensure the delivery of high-quality circus arts training in an environment that is fun, safe and nurturing. They attend to the care, safety, and morale of the Smirkus camp staff and campers, and respond to parental concerns throughout the summer season. The Camp Director also assists in planning and supervising camp set-up and closing, and the camp facilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Majority of duties, but not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary.)

  • Perform needs assessment and recruit, hire, and train summer staff with the Assistant Camp Director and Director of Programming. Monitor staff performance and provide direction, guidance, and support. Conduct performance evaluations at the middle and end of the season.
  • Plan and conduct staff orientation with Assistant Camp Director, and relevant seasonal staff.
  • With Director of Operations, plan and supervise camp facilities management. Order camp supplies and equipment.
  • Act as the senior on-site public face of Smirkus and respond to parent questions and concerns.
  • Facilitate communication among participants, parents, and staff to promote coordination and to address their concerns and resolve conflicts.
  • Prepare staffing schedules with the Assistant Camp Director.
  • Conduct camper review prior to each session to inform staff of any special needs and relevant health or behavioral history.
  • Monitor program delivery to ensure excellence in providing a top-quality camper experience.
  • Monitor cleanliness and repair of the facility, ensuring that camper and staff living quarters, program, and dining areas are clean and in a good state of repair.
  • Oversee a safe transportation system for staff and campers. This includes arranging for staff arrivals and departures and the transportation of campers to and from off-site activities.
  • Develop camper safety policies with Assistant Camp Director and Head Coach. Monitor safety in all camper and staff areas and events.
  • Ensure that policies and procedures are followed during emergency, accident, and incident situations.
  • Authorize expenditures within guidelines. Manage camp budget and reporting.
  • Work with year-round staff in off-season program planning and policy and procedure reviews.
  • Implement established camp and company policies and expectations as the senior supervisor.
  • Provide input to budgeting and marketing for the camp program.
 
Position Requirements

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
(Minimum education, experience, technical and communication skill levels and licenses/certificates normally required to perform the duties of this position.)

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and life experience; degree in recreation, education or youth development desirable
  • 4 years of progressively more responsible experience in department or program management, including supervisory experience
  • A minimum of 2 years’ of residential camp senior management experience
  • Demonstrated experience in design and implementation of recreation and/or youth programs
  • Knowledge of American Camping Association standards and regulations affecting camps
  • Demonstrated ability to relate well to people of all ages, from young children to grandparents
  • Excellent interpersonal and client service skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize competing tasks
  • Willingness to reside on-site at camp during the summer season
  • Understanding of the circus arts.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:
(Typical working conditions associated with this type of work and environmental hazards, if any, that may be encountered in performing the duties of this position.)

When Camp is in session, programs are conducted primarily in outdoor circus tents and indoor dormitory settings. Camp offices are located in a renovated farmhouse. Kitchen and dining facilities occupy a renovated barn structure.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (The physical effort generally associated with this position.)

Work involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and stooping, as well as occasional pushing, pulling, or carrying gym equipment. Good hearing and verbal communication capabilities are essential to working in high action settings.

 

SUPERVISION:

Supervision is received from the Director of Programming.
Supervision is provided to seasonal camp staff such as the Assistant Camp Director, Head Coach, Head Counselor, Activities Coordinator, Head Cook, and Health Professional.
